“Maisel will be more comfortable here. And what I’m doing with Sofia is so much more than playing.” His voice goes real low, the way Daddy’s used to get when he was giving us a last-chance warning.

“Ugh. I’m starting to think it’s the other way around. Men get stupid with certain women. You think she’s at your mercy, but I’ve seen the look in her eyes, Gid. She’s a cornered animal just waiting for the chance to bite.” I hear the clacking of teeth and imagine she’s just mimicked the motion.

Now it’s he who laughs. “I fucking hope she bites me. It’ll give me a reason to bite back.”

More footsteps, then they stop near the foyer. I dare a peek and spot the two of them facing each other by the door. Him towering over her. Her glaring up at him.

“I don’t know anything about kids,” Scar continues to argue.

“What’s there to know? All you have to do is make sure she has food and water,” Gideon says.

“I’m not a pet,” I blurt out, stepping fully into view. “You don’t just leave me bowls of food and water.”

Scar points at me. “Do you see that? I told her to stay put. She doesn’t listen. Do you want me to lock her up?”

I roll my eyes. “It’s not like I left the condo. Chill. If he wants to go take care of his other prisoners, let him. I’ll behave.”

Gideon’s lips pull up and I can’t help my heart flipping in my chest or the little sigh that escapes me. For an old dude, he’s insanely hot, with jet-black hair and ice-blue eyes.

“You wouldn’t happen to have a seventeen-year-old brother, would you, Giddy?” I ask, liking the tic he gets in his jaw.

His smile vanishes and Scar bursts out laughing.

“Maybe thiswillbe fun after all,” she says.

He glowers at her, then turns it on me. “I’ve asked you three times to stop calling me that. I’m Mr. Black to you. Learn some respect, Maisel.”

“Yeah. Skye always tells me to respect my elders. But seeing as you kidnapped us…” I raise my brows and dip my head in a you-fill-in-the-blank sort of way.

Laughing again, Scarlet says, “She doesn’t listen.”

Gideon turns back to her and pats her on the shoulder, saying, “Good luck,” before he leaves.

For a long while, she stands there, staring after him. As if he abandoned her when she needed him the most. It makes me feel a little sorry for her.

“Am I that scary? I mean, I can wipe myself. Feed myself. Put myself to bed. Really, for a prisoner, I’m easy.” I shrug.

Her shoulders slump. “Something tells me that’s not exactly true.”

“I’ll prove it.” I make my way to the kitchen with her in tow. “What do you have to eat around here?”

“Wine,” she replies, leaning against the counter. “Cheese, maybe.”

I open the fridge. The very empty fridge, save for half a bottle of wine. “Yikes.”

“I’m a busy woman. I eat out a lot,” she says defensively.

My stomach growls, which is weird because a second ago, I was perfectly fine. Guess realizing there’s no food has suddenly made me hungry. “Can we order in? Or do you like to keep this place super secret? I won’t scream for help when the delivery comes. I swear.” I raise three scout’s honor fingers.

She rolls her eyes at me. “Kid, if you screamed when the delivery came, I’d throw you out there and then you’d really be screwed.”

“Wouldn’t Giddy be mad at you, then? I’m his trump card.” I grin widely.

“He’d get over it.” She tugs her phone from her pocket. “What do you like?”

“John’s Chinese.”

“John’s Chinese?” She laughs. “Are you serious?”
