Bexley had taken a lot of time to adjust to life in the UK but also to the press and the daily invasion of their private lives. She’d handled it so well, but it had still taken her time to get used to it. They’d spent many a weekend in Wales for a while there, just trying to get away from it all. Alex had taken her to Balmoral with the family, which in the world’s eyes, cemented Bexley as the likely fiancée people had been waiting for Alex to find. Alex had wanted to ask Bexley many times, but Bexley’s work was important to her, and the woman spent a lot of days working in the office and a lot of evenings working at home. Alex hadn’t ever found the right time.

As she watched her friends celebrate, though, Alex knew she was being ridiculous. There would never be a right or perfect time for her to ask the woman she loved to be her wife. Bexley already was her wife in everything but that piece of paper and royal ceremony. It was time they made it official.

“So, you’re about to be Aunt Alex again,” Alice said to her later when they were standing alone at the party.

“I can’t wait,” she replied with a smile.

“Alex, what’s going on?”

“What do you mean?”

“I know you’re happy for us, but something’s up.”

“Nothing’s up.”

“Liar,” Alice said, chuckling. “Come on. You can tell me. I won’t tell Bex, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“I just… I want… And I don’t know…”

“Oh,” Alice spoke with a knowing smile. “Really? You’re still worried about that?”

“About what?”

“She’s going to say yes, Alex.”

“I know. I mean, IthinkI know.”

“What’s holding you back?”

“Nothing.”

“Alex, she loves you. She moved to another country for you.”

“I know. I just… When we get engaged, there’s a ticking clock on her career. She loves what she does. It makes her so happy.”

“She can technically still do some of what she’s doing now even when you’re married.”

“Not the same way. And – I don’t know – I suppose I’ve been waiting because I want her to have as much time as possible to do what she loves in the way that she loves.”

“Alex, Bexley knew what she was signing up for. Give her more credit than that.”

“It’s more about me than her. I give her all the credit in the world. It’s that I know what I’m asking of her, and…”

“What are you two talking about?” Palmer asked, sidling up next to Alex.

“Perfect person; perfect timing,” Alice said. “When you met Elizabeth, did you regret having to give up your career in journalism to be her Consort?”

“What? No,” Palmer replied. “Oh,” she added, looking at Alex. “I swear, every time one of you finds someone you love, I getallthe questions.” She laughed. “Bexley?”

“She loves her job,” Alex stated.

“And she loves you,” Palmer replied. “You’re not asking her to give up the work, just the paycheck. That’s how it works.”

“She donates her money anyway,” Alex said. “Ever since she moved here. She doesn’t need it anymore. And with her grandmother passing in April, she didn’t need to support her, either. So, she doesn’t even bring home a paycheck.”

“Then, what are you worried about?” Palmer asked, smacking her lightly on the shoulder. “Ask the girl already.”
