“The two nicer coffee mugs I have that actually match,” Bexley replied.

“I like this one better,” Alex said. “Do you really enunciate your profanities?”

“F-u-c-k, yeah,” Bexley said, extending the first word.

Alex laughed before saying, “I know it didn’t end well, but I had a great day today, Bex.”

“Can I ask you something?” Bexley asked.

“Anything.”

“The woman who approached you after you went to the bathroom…”

“Ah,” Alex said. “She didn’t recognize me.” Alex removed the hat from her head. “And seemed nice.” She ruffled her mussed hair.

“She gave you her number?”

“I told her I was only in town for the night. She asked for mine, and I obviously didn’t give it to her, but she wrote hers on a napkin. Oh, wait,” she said, reaching into the back pocket of her jeans and pulling it out. “Forgot it was there.” She sat it on the counter and moved her cup on top of it. “Don’t want to ruin your countertops.”

Bexley smiled and asked, “You don’t want to keep that?”

“Not even in the slightest,” Alex said confidently.

“Too American for you?” Bexley joked.

Alex laughed and said, “What? No. I have a thing for Americans, actually.”

“You do not.” Bexley laughed.

“Yes, I do,” Alex said and walked around the counter to the coffee maker, which she’d seen Bexley use enough by now to know how to work it. “I had that crush on Alice, remember?”

“That’s one person,” Bexley said.

“There have been other crushes.”

“Really?” Bexley sat on the stool by the counter.

Alex began making the coffee and said, “Yes. Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence, and–”

“Those are celebrities. They don’t count.Everyonehas celebrity crushes. Besides, you’ve never even met them.”

“Yes, I have,” Alex objected, turning to see the surprise on Bexley’s face. “They’ve both been to the palace, along with a few others. I even spent some time with a few of them.”

“You slept with–”

“No,” Alex said, laughing. “I said I spent some time, Bexley. I didn’t sleep with any of them. But like I said, Idohave a thing for Americans.”

Bexley sighed and said, “Well, I can’t fault you for Alice, as you know.”

Alex opened Bexley’s refrigerator and found the half-and-half. She poured a little into the cup and put it on the counter in front of Bexley.

“Thank you,” Bexley said.

“You’re welcome. And Alice and I never would have happened in the same way you and Alice never would have happened. She was always meant to be with Nora. She didn’t even realize she could be with a woman until she realized how much she wanted her.”

“I know.” Bexley put both hands around the cup in front of her. “I just want someone who wants me howshewants Nora. Crazy, right?”

“No, that’s not crazy,” Alex replied, swallowing and moving to sit down next to Bexley. “It’s not. I want the same thing.”
