“It’s a coronationball, but yes,” Alex replied, still smiling at her.

“You told her you liked me back then?”

“Yes,” Alex confirmed. “You were with someone.” She swallowed. “You were with Holly.”

“Oh,” Bexley uttered.

“I didn’t say anything because I’d never get in the way of your happiness, Bexley. I thought my feelings might go away, but they never have.”

Bexley’s heart was racing. She’d had no idea. How had her best friend not told her this very important information?

“I’m going to kill Alice.”

“She’s a Queen. I’d advise against that. Kleinland’s laws are very specific. Even threatening the sovereign’s life means–”

“Alex,” Bexley interrupted.

“Sorry,” Alex said. “I’ve rambled enough for one night. I saw the tea on my table. Thank you for that. I’ll drink it before bed.”

“Wait. You’re just leaving?”

“I’ve dropped a lot on you tonight, Bexley. I think we could both do with some sleep and some time to think, don’t you?”

Then, Alex was gone.

CHAPTER 23

“Can I get you anything?”

“You’ve asked me that four times since you got here,” Bexley’s grandmother replied.

“I just want to make sure you have everything you need. I’m leaving soon.”

“And Stanley is here to help,” her grandmother reminded.

“That’s right, Grandma. I’m thegoodgrandchild.” Stan winked at Bexley.

Alex glared at him just as Stan looked up and over at her, catching the look. While Alex knew he was joking, she didn’t want him making Bexley feel guilty.

“Stan’s going to come by at least once a week, and when–”

“Your brothers get home, they’ll be here every day, or you’ll kill them,” the older woman finished for Bexley.

“They’re only in town for a couple of weeks.”

“I know, Bexley. Don’t pick on them too much, though. If they don’t want to visit, don’t force them.”

“Oh, they’ll visit,” Stan said. “I texted them both a schedule.”

“You didnot.” Bexley laughed at her friend.

“I should give you three some time,” Alex spoke, placing her hand on Bexley’s shoulder only for a moment. “This is a family thing.”

Stan looked up at her and gave Alex an expression she didn’t know how to read.

“You don’t have to go,” Bexley told her.

“It’s all right. I’ll check with security to make sure the plane is ready for us.”
