Stan laughed and replied, “Only for her.”

“You and this place are both favorites on my phone, so if there’s an emergency, the call will go through no matter what, okay?” Bexley said.

“Bex, I’ve got this. She’s going to be fine. I’ll come to visit and make sure she has everything she needs.”

“I’ve set up a weekly grocery delivery of the food I know she likes so that she has snacks and easy things to cook. I’ll send you the account info, too, in case you need to change it if she asks or if you notice something is running low.”

“No problem,” he replied.

“Are you sure you won’t be too busy?”

“I will always make time for her and for you. You know that,” he said, pulling Bexley in for a hug.

“I know,” Bexley replied, but instead of closing her eyes for the hug or looking away, her eyes were still on Alex’s.

“Well, I’m going to get home so I can shower and dress like a gentleman for my big date tonight.” Stan winked at Bexley. “I’ll see you two later. Fly safe, okay?”

“We will,” Bexley replied.

Alex smiled a little at Bexley using the wordweto describe them together. Stan waved at Alex and then left the dining room.

“You’re leaving?” Bexley asked, still looking unhappy at the idea.

“We should get to the airport.”

“Alex…”

“There are some things I need to take care of at home. I’ll be back in Kleinland soon enough.”

“And you’re telling me this has nothing to do with what happened last night?”

“It’s a combination of things,” Alex replied.

“Well, this is going to be a fun flight,” Bexley said sarcastically.

But Alex had seen it. She’d seen what Stan had allowed her to see. Bexley hadn’t wanted Alex to leave. She’d been concerned, worried, and something else that Alex wasn’t sure of completely, but it looked a bit like sadness.

CHAPTER 24

Bexley hadn’t slept much the night before, so when they got on board, it didn’t take long for her eyes to grow heavy. Alex, for her part, was on her laptop from the moment they got on the plane, giving Bexley the not-so-subtle signal that she didn’t want to talk. So, Bexley let her exhaustion take her away. When she woke up, it was for dinner, and Alex was sitting across from her by then. They ate in relative silence, with Alex filling Bexley in on the event that Alex’s father didn’t want Lawrence to attend for her. Bexley nodded her understanding but couldn’t stop herself from wondering if Alex really had to go to that event or if she was just trying to get away from Bexley now that things were so awkward between them.

When they landed in Kleinland, Bexley stood and waited for Alex to stand with her. Alex didn’t.

“We’re refueling and taking off again,” she said in explanation.

“Oh. You’re not coming back at all?” Bexley asked.

“It’s a short flight. Best to just make it now,” Alex replied, looking up at her.

“Alex, don’t do this,” she said.

“Ma’am, we’ll be but a minute. Can I get you something to drink while we wait for the refueling?” the flight attendant asked.

“No, thank you,” Alex said. “Let me see you to the car,” she added to Bexley.

“No, it’s fine. I can manage on my own,” Bexley replied.

She walked down the aisle without saying goodbye and made her way down the stairs just as her bags were pulled from the belly of the plane.
