“Are you two together now?”

“What? No,” Bexley said.

“Why not?” Alice asked, her brow furrowed.

“Al, I can’t be with her.”

“Why not?” Alice repeated. “Bex, you like her. You like her a lot. I can tell. So can Stan, by the way.”

“You two have been talking about me?”

“Like you and Stan haven’t talked about me, or you and I haven’t talked about him,” Alice replied. “We love each other.”

“Alice, she told me she wants me.”

“Wants you?” Alice said, eyes going wide. “Did she try something?”

“No, she’s been the perfect gentlewoman. God, she’s been really sweet and patient about the whole thing.”

“That’s a good thing. Why do you sound like it’s not?”

“No, itisa good thing.”

“O-k-a-y…”

“Al, she’s amazing. I didn’t realize it before, but she is. She’s got that cocky side to her, and there’s the charm, and… God help me, I find it all so very sexy. But then, there’s this shyness to her, and this part where she’s kind of nervous around me sometimes.”

“She told me about the tool belt.” Alice winked at her.

“The tool belt?”

“She couldn’t get it off. You had to help her.”

“Yeah. So?”

“So, she said her heart raced when you got that close to her, Bex.”

“It did?” Bexley asked softly.

“She’s been in awe of you since you two first met,” Alice reminded.

“Me?”

“Will you stop doing that?” Alice asked seriously. “You always do that – you always make it seem like you’re not worth someone’s time. You did it with Oskar a minute ago.”

“He’s the Prime Minister, Al.”

“I’m the Queen. You just burst intomyoffice.”

“You’re my best friend. I knew you when you were milking cows.”

“Alex isn’t better than you. You’re not better than her. You’re both just people. You like each other. She came here for you, Bex.”

“Because of the program.”

“Bexley, she’s not auditing the program because she needs one in the UK. She’s here because she wanted to spend time with you, and this was the best way for her to do that. She left you alone when you were with Holly because she wanted to respect your relationship, but you’re single now, and she wants to be with you. She wants my very accomplished, beautiful, and smart best friend. Don’t push her away because of who her family is or who she’ll be one day.”

“I’mnot pushing her away.Sheleft,” Bexley argued. “She told me she was giving me some time and that she had something to do back home, but I don’t even know if that’s the truth. She probably just wanted to get away from me since I’m clearly unable to tell her that I like her, too.”
