“I’m sorry, Alex. I promised Margaret a week away. I booked the place two weeks ago.”

“This isn’t you two trying to get pregnant while someone else watches the boys, is it?”

“No,” he said. “Her whole family is going to be there, too. That’s why I can’t cancel. Her parents, her brother, his wife, and their kids – they’ll all be there. The boys will be there, too. Trust me, we willnotbe making another baby while we’re there.”

“I told Bexley we were going this weekend.”

“You could always come with us.”

“I am not bringing the woman I’m attempting to date to Balmoral with most of my family there. Plus, what are the odds Mother and Father know about this?”

“I told them this morning.”

“And you actually think they’re going to let you go without them? I’m surprised they haven’t called me yet, telling me to go,” Alex said.

“If they want to go, they can go. You should come, too.”

“You’re missing the point, Lawrence. I want a weekend alone with Bexley, not a weekend with her being nervous around my whole family, likely scaring her away before we even know if this can be real between us.”

“Go another weekend.”

“I can’t. I’ve made such a big deal out of this, Larry. She actually seems sort of excited about going away with me. And not to the States, where she’s taking care of her grandmother, and not to St.Rais, where we were with our friends – she actually wants to go withme.Justme.”

“It’s not as if we have a shortage of places you can take her,” he suggested.

“Balmoral matters.”

“I know it does. And you know that, too. You, as heir, don’t just take some woman you’renotofficially courting to Balmoral. People track what goes on there and who goes. You should take her somewhere else, Alex.”

Alex had an idea and said, “You’re right.”

???

“Strawberries, right?” Alex asked.

“For Bexley? Absolutely,” Alice replied. “Can you take her?” she asked Nora, who was sitting beside her on the small sofa in their living room.

“Sure,” Nora said, taking Julia from her wife. “Hi, Alex.”

“Hello, my little love,” Alex said to Tor, who was lying next to Nora on the sofa.

Then, Alex moved to him and picked him up, holding him against her hip.

“He never cries when you hold him,” Alice said.

“He loves his Auntie Alex,” she said, kissing the top of his head. “Julia, however, isn’t quite sure of me or Bexley.”

“She loves both of you, Alex. She’s just got more attitude. I thinkshetakes after me, andhetakes after her.”

“Heisa calm baby,” Nora noted.

“Unless he’s gassy or away from his sister,” Alex said.

“I hope they always protect each other,” Alice replied.

“They will,” Alex told her. “I’ll always protectmybrother. We’re not even twins, and he just stole Balmoral from me, but I’ll always protect him.”

“He stole Balmoral from you?” Nora asked.
