“I can cook exactly two meals. Are you interested?” she asked as they walked up the short staircase to the door.

“What are they?”

“You’ll find out, I suppose.” Alex stood at the door and waited. “One second. Then, they’ll leave us alone.”

Two members of the security team opened the door and walked inside. A minute later, they emerged and nodded.

“All clear, Your Royal Highness.”

“Thank you,” she said. “After you,” she added to Bexley.

Bexley walked inside and looked around. It was one large room, much like a studio apartment. There was a small kitchen all the way to the left, a small two-seater table and a living area in front of the door, and a sofa with a fireplace across from it. There was a coffee table in between with a nice, thick rug on the floor, but no TV. The bed was to the right. It was covered with a dark, thick comforter, and there were two bedside tables and a wardrobe. Outside of a small bookshelf mounted above the fireplace, that was it. There were three doors in the whole cottage. One was likely the bathroom, and Bexley guessed that the second one was a closet. She wasn’t sure where the third one led, but this was the cottage of the future Queen of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

“It’s beautiful, Alex.”

Bexley heard the door close behind her.

“Thank you. It’s small, but I like it that way.”

“I can see why.”

“There’s a small garden out back I can’t do anything with this time of year, but there’s a fence around it, and I have a couple of chairs back there.” Alex motioned to the door next to the kitchen that Bexley now figured must be the back door. “Security will have brought our stuff to the door. Let me just grab it.”

“Okay,” Bexley replied, looking at the bed that looked to be a full-size bed.

Alex opened and closed the door a minute later. Bexley turned around to see she had their bags on the floor now.

“Alex?”

“Yes?”

“I’m just noticing that there’s only one bed.”

“Please remember that I’d planned on us going to Balmoral originally, where there are plenty of beds,” Alex said. “I wasn’t…”

“It’s okay,” Bexley told her, shrugging a shoulder.

“I will, of course, sleep on the sofa.”

“Does it pull out?”

“No, but it’s comfortable. I’ve fallen asleep there many times before.”

Bexley wanted to say that they could share a bed and it would be fine, but she wasn’t sure she was ready for that tonight.

“It looks like the fire has gone out, unfortunately,” Alex added. “We’ll need it to keep us warm. The wood is out back. I’ll just be a minute.”

“You’re going out?” Bexley asked.

“Just to the firewood pile. I’ll be right back. You can unpack if you’d like.”

“Can I come with you?” Bexley asked.

“It’s cold out there.” Alex smiled.

“I know,” Bexley replied.

“Okay. Come on. I can put you to work if you really want to help.”
