“You hadn’t kissed anyone until Wilder?”

“Yup.”

“Did you tell him?”

“Of course, I did. I didn’t want him to think I was bad at it or super sloppy. I had to…”

Padma jumped up and paced the living room, gulping deeply from her drink.

Amelia paused. “What?”

“That explains so much,” Padma said. “He must’ve thought he took something from you. He’s a very honorable man.”

“He said as much. But that’s why I straddled him. I wanted more.”

Her new friend laughed. “Oh, I bet you did.”

“Don’t make fun of me,” she laughed. “I haven’t been attracted to a man since before I got married. I thought I would always be trapped. But the second I laid eyes on Wilder…” She huffed out a breath. “I don’t know how to explain it, but I immediately felt like I could trust him. I just had this feeling that I was safe, that he would help me.”

“You had other feelings too.” Padma wiggled her brows suggestively.

“If you mean that I was sexually attracted to a person for the first time in my life, you’re right.”

“That’s huge.”

“I know.”

“But no. I mean, that isreallyhuge.”

“I knooow!” she repeated.

“It would be a lot for Wilder.”

She frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I think he gave up on finding love— his mate—a long time ago. If you’re into him, he might want to keep you at arm’s length.”

“Because he wouldn’t want to hurt me if he met his mate,” Amelia guessed.

Padma downed the rest of her drink. “Yeah. Sure. Maybe that’s it.”

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Padma hid something. Amelia longed to ask more details, but she couldn’t.

Besides, Padma was loyal to Wilder. She would never divulge his secrets.

No matter how hard Amelia begged. No matter how many secrets of her own she dared to share.

THIRTEEN

WILDER

Wilder paced his office, rubbing his temples against the headache that hadn’t budged since he walked away from Amelia. He thought that spending time in the woods in his wolf would help. He thought jerking off a dozen times would take the edge off.

Nothing worked.

Usually, when he felt this hard up, he could call one of his regular bedmates, but every time he thought about it, his stomach rolled.

He didn’t want anyone. He wanted one person.
