He didn’t plan on ever being a dick with his mate.

He loved her too much.

TWENTY-TWO

AMELIA

The library was quiet and dark. Wilder was in bed, sleeping away their latest silk sheets activity. He was pretty insatiable, and she was glad. After the world’s longest dry spell brought on by the shittiest of marriages, it was nice to be attracted to someone.

It was nice to feel wanted, sexy, and desirable.

There was no doubt in her mind that Wilder wanted her. All the time.

Smiling with that knowledge, Amelia went to the library and picked out one of the many books she wanted to read. There wouldn’t be enough time to read it. To read anything, really. She hadn’t even explored to her heart’s content, but between spending time in the covers with Wilder and reading, it was an easy win.

Wilder won.

Time and time again, Wilder won.

He was slowly winning her heart too.

That’s exactly what had brought her to the library in the middle of the night. She didn’t want to be away from Wilder, but she also knew she needed some momentary distance to put her thoughts in order.

“If I were my best friend,” she said out loud to the book open in her lap. “I would caution myself so hard.Girl, you can’t fall for the first guy you meet after leaving your ex. There are laws about it.” She sighed. “Okay, so there aren’t reallylaws, but it’s gotta be wrong to fall for the first guy. Of course, Wilder isn’t just any guy. It’sWilder.” She sighed again and laid her head back on the small seat.

It was complicated to fall for the CEO of the security company who was helping you run away from an abusive marriage. It would have made a good book, but as a major life event, she didn’t really know how to behave or what to do.

“If I were my mother, I would say that I need to follow my heart.” She flipped the book back open. “And right now, my heart is definitely telling me that Wilder is the guy I need to be with.”

“Amelia?” a deep voice called from down the hall. “Are you in there?”

Her heart leaped into her throat. Had he heard her talking to herself? Or worse yet, had he heard what she was saying to herself?

“Yup.”

Wilder walked in and leaned on the door. In his underwear with his hair a right mess, he looked like a mischievous lover. “Of course, I would wake up in the middle of the night only to find you in the library. A man could start to think you’re only dating him for the books.”

“Iamonly dating you for the books,” she teased.

He prowled toward her, lifted her off her seat to take her place, and set her on his knees. “Yeah? Too bad you didn’t know about the books before we met.”

“I didn’t even know I was dating you,” she said softly.

“Are you kidding me?” he stilled. “I fly you to France twice on my private jet and you don’t know if we’re dating?”

She giggled and buried her head in his chest. “I’m a little rusty. I don’t know how to do this.”

He sighed. “Neither do I.”

Amelia was resolved to take a shot. With his shifter hearing, there was every chance he had heard her talking to herself. All she could do now was own it and ask him point blank.

Or, at the very least, as point blank as she could be.

“Are we dating, Wilder? Is that what is going on?”

“I don’t know, love. I like being with you. I like spending my days with you, and I dread the day that your life will be settled because it will mean saying good-bye.” The words rushed out of him as if he hadn’t wanted to say them at all.

“Wilder,” she touched his cheek. “What happens when you meet your mate?”
