“And I… yes.” He licked his lips and turned his back to her. It was obviously difficult for him to be so bare. To be soemotional.

Amelia wanted to tell him she loved him, too, but she couldn’t. She hadn’t said those words since her mother died. Surely, she couldn’t say them to this man she barely knew.

No matter how wonderful he was.

“Well, Wilder, I feel for you. Deeply. You make my heart beat fast, you make every moment better. I don’t know how I would have done all this without you. I also wouldn’t have wanted to do this without you. And I don’t want our time to end.”

He gave her a small smile. “Our time doesn’t have to end. Not now, not ever. You decide.”

She huffed out a breath. “That’s a lot of pressure.”

He chuckled. “You’re telling me. If you want to be my mate, I gotta bite you. Scarred forever and forever mine.”

Amelia gasped. “Wow, but that changes nothing.”

“How can you say that? It changes everything.”

“It doesn’t, though. Not if we don’t want it to. We can carry on like we’ve been doing. This doesn’t…”

“Have to mean anything?” she finished for him. “And you would be okay with that?”

“No,” he admitted. “I’ve been missing you for five years. Now that you’re here, now that we’ve been together, I don’t know how I can let you go. All I do know is that when it comes time, Iwilllet you go. If that is what you want.”

She nodded and flew into his arms. “But you would fight for me?”

“Always, love. Always.”

TWENTY-THREE

WILDER

It wasn’t every day a shifter told his mate she was destined to be his.

Wilder didn’t exactly like how the conversation had ended, but it could have gone so much worse. Amelia could’ve walked out and never spoken to him again. She could’ve raged and said all kinds of nasty shit.

She hadn’t.

She had hugged him with all her strength.

It wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted Amelia to be his mate. He wanted her to say that she wanted him to mate her, that she never wanted to be apart from him.

For now, he had to be okay with what he had.

He also had to remember that a week ago, Amelia had been stuck in a marriage she never really thought she could escape. Now that she had escaped, she wouldn’t just jump into his arms because fate wanted it to be so.

Amelia was a smart and independent woman. She would want to make that choice for herself.

For now, this had to be okay.

“We should go back to bed,” Amelia said against his chest.

“Together?” he asked, feeling like a little kid asking for permission for a cookie.

“Of course together!” she replied. “Unless you don’t want to,” she quickly added.

“Oh, I want to. Just so long as you know there is no pressure.”

She nodded and pulled him to his feet. “A good night’s sleep will actually help. I can’t remember the last time you let me sleep through the night.”
