“Yeah...” my voice trailed off, holding back from saying all the things that I knew I shouldn’t...

She’s leaving. Don’t go there. It wouldn’t work anyway.

I pushed away my emotions. “How about a sandwich?”

ChapterSeventeen

Cheyenne

“You promise that you’ll take him out to the bathroom in a couple of hours, right?” I eyed Wade as I followed Hazel out into the garage.

“Yes.” He rolled his eyes at me, Takoda tucked safely underneath his arm. “I think I can handle your dog while you’re gone for like two hours, max.”

“That’s a long time to trust you with anything,” Hazel snorted, giving him a funny look as she pressed the garage door opener.

“That’s not making me feel any better about this,” I said to Hazel, who was already climbing into the front seat of her F150. “Maybe I should just stay back.”

“No, go,” Wade urged, walking up and opening the door for me. “I know that the trip to town will be a good outing for you, and besides, Bob worked hard to reroute the water from the front of the place, we gotta use the damn driveway or he might get offended.”

“It’s true, come on, Cheyenne,” Hazel chimed in. “I legitneverget to have another woman around who’s not at least twenty years older than me. This is a nice change. I’d like to take advantage of it—also, I’m literallydyingfor some snacks.”

“Fine, fine,” I said, climbing into the cab of the truck. I squirmed a little as I settled on the seats made of black leather, feeling as though I might ruin it by just sitting there.

Everything they own issonice.

“You’re going to have a nice time.” Wade patted my leg, his eyes holding mine for a moment before dropping to my lips.

We both felt the same urge—and both ignored it.

“I’ll see you when we get back,” I muttered, grabbing for the door and swinging it shut. I took a deep breath as I reached for my seatbelt. As it clicked, I got the nerve to look back up at where Wade had been, but he was already carrying Takoda back into the house and shutting the garage door.

“You two are so into each other.” Hazel giggled, turning on the ignition. “I don’t know why you won’t just admit it. I know you’re sleeping together.”

My mouth dropped open at the assumption. “How do you… why do you think that?” I managed to choke out as she backed out of the garage.

“Well, Lindy, our housekeeper, who lives in the house, took out the bathroom trash from the one between you and Wade’s room. She said she saw—”

“Yep, okay.” I cut her off. “I get it.”

Hazel had the giddiest look, her auburn hair swooped up into a loose cute ponytail. She was one of those women who was just naturally beautiful, no matter what they did. “You know, Wade doesn’t exactly get around, right?”

I furrowed my brow. “I know that he doesn’t date, yeah. He made that pretty apparent with that whole gold digger fear he has.” As much as I didn’t want to admit it, that part of Wade fried my nerves...

He just never let that go.

And Hazel rolled her eyes at the mention. “I swear one of these days, he’s going to look back and realize how stupid he is for thinking that way.”

I shrugged. “I guess he just got his heart broken. It happens.”

“You’re so sweet on him...” She smiled, navigating through the slightly flooded driveway. “Man, I hope the rain is over.”

“Me, too,” I said, though the pang of sadness hit me like a ton of bricks. Leaving meant saying goodbye to Wade...

And I was still dealing with that—but it didn’t matter.

“Where do you think would be a good place to get a replacement vehicle?” I asked, carefully watching Hazel’s reaction.

“Like a rental? Or to buy?” she asked me, stopping the truck at the end of the driveway.
