“Fair enough, but where were you two nights ago?”

“I played poker with some buddies, and then I came home.”

“What time did you get home?”

“Around eleven.”

“And your wife can attest to that?”

“She can,” he said, giving Freddie a frosty glare.

“We’ll need the names and numbers of your friends.”

“What the fuck? You’re going to actually call them?”

“That’s how we confirm alibis.”

He made a big production of rolling his eyes and blowing out a breath to express his displeasure before he grabbed the notebook and pen Freddie offered him, took out his phone and wrote down the requested info. “Are you going to tell my friends that you think I killed the doctor who assaulted my wife—and his family?”

“We don’t suspect you of that,” Freddie said. “Should we?”

His gaze fairly incinerated Freddie. “No, you shouldn’t. I didn’t do it, but I sure as fuck didn’t cry any tears of sorrow for that sick son of a bitch.”

“What about for his kids?” Freddie asked. “Did you feel for them?”

“Of course I did. Whatever this was about, it couldn’t have involved them. I never understand how anyone can hurt innocent kids. Or dogs. People who hurt dogs and kids make me sick.”

Freddie gave him his card and went through the usual spiel about calling with anything else that might be relevant. “Thank you for your time. We appreciate it.”

“If it wasn’t him, I hope you catch the person who hurt those kids.”

“We’re doing our best,” Freddie said.

“It was cool to meet you, Mrs. Cappuano.”

“It’s Lieutenant Holland on the job, but thank you.”

“My wife thinks you’re a badass for being a cop while you’re first lady.”

“Tell her thanks from me, and I wish you guys all the best in your fertility journey.”

“Thanks. It’s a bitch.”

“Yes, it is.”

“Are you still hoping to have a baby?” he asked her.

“Not like I was. We’re very happy with the family we have.”

“It’s good to know there’s hope.”

“There’s always hope,” Sam said. “Best of luck to you.”

“You, too. Tell your husband to keep his chin up. Plenty of people support him.”

“He’ll be glad to hear that.”

As they walked back to the car where Vernon and Jimmy waited for them, Sam said, “I didn’t like him at first, but he rallied toward the end.”
