“We have nothing further to say at this time,” Freddie said. “Have a good day.”

“Well done,” Captain Malone said when they were back inside.

“You think so?” Freddie asked.

“Wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it.”

“Thanks for the support.”

“I just had to arrest former Lieutenant Gibbons for assisting Stahl in archiving cases he didn’t want to deal with.” Malone rubbed the back of his neck. “A guy I’ve known thirty years.”

“Damn,” Freddie said. “How’d he take it?”

“He was shocked that I was arresting him.”

“Did he say why he did it?”

“Stahl had dirt on him having a relationship with a detective who worked with him. Told him he’d expose him unless he did his dirty work for him.”

“Wow. Just when we think we’ve seen it all where Stahl is concerned, there’s more.”

“I swear to God, if it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to arrest any cop—past or present—who had anything to do with Stahl and his schemes.”

“It’s hard to believe that people helped him.”

“Most of them probably did it because he was blackmailing them, but that doesn’t excuse them abetting his criminal activity.”

“No, it doesn’t.”

“I need to go update the chief on the arrest of Gibbons. I’ll check in with you later.”

“Thanks for the support out there.”

“No problem.”

When Freddie returned to the pit, he was surprised to see the lights on in Sam’s office. “Hey,” he said.

“Hey, yourself,” she said. “How’s it going?”

“Okay, I guess. Captain Malone just told me he’s arrested former Lieutenant Gibbons for assisting Stahl with the archiving of case files.”

“Holy shit. No way. He was Archie before Archie. My dad worked closely with him and always said he was good people.”

“Apparently, Stahl blackmailed him with info about an affair with a subordinate.”

“Jeez. Does Stahl’s depravity know no limits?”

“Not that I’ve seen. How’re the kids?”

“A little better. Nick came up to stay with them before I left. He’s taking meetings from the residence.”

“Look at you two balancing your big jobs.”

“We’re doing what we can for the people. Catch me up on Blanchet. Where are we?”

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

While they waited for Cam and Matt to return with the Cortezes, Freddie, Sam and Gonzo took a closer look at the women involved in the lawsuit against Dr. Blanchet. They scanned the social media accounts of each of the four women as well as those of their partners. Previously, the other detectives in the squad had gone back a month in time on each of the named principals on the lawsuit. They went back further.
