“Sounds good.”

He was surprised to see Sam enter the pit. “What’re you doing here?”

“Last I knew, I worked here. Nick is working from the residence this morning. What’s the latest?”

Freddie updated her on the request for the warrant as well as his reservations about whether they’d found their suspects.

“The cell data will cinch it if it was them.”

“Yeah, for sure. How’re the kids feeling?”

“Much better today. They should be good to go back to school on Monday.”

“You didn’t have to come in today.”

“Yes, I did. I want to support you as you see the case across the finish line.”

“Thanks. I’d much rather work with you than without you.”

“You mean you’d much rather have me telling you what to do than figuring it out on your own.”

“That. Exactly that.”

She laughed. “From all accounts, you’ve done an excellent job of leading a difficult, complex, emotionally draining case.”

“Really?”

She grinned. “Why do you sound so surprised?”

“I don’t know. I guess I still see myself as the junior detective hoping to play in the big leagues someday.”

“Freddie, my little grasshopper, you’ve been playing in the big leagues for years now, and you’re ready for this. You have been for a while, frankly.” Her smile became a frown. “I worry sometimes that working with me is holding you back from moving forward in your own career.”

“No, it isn’t. Where is there to go from here except for your job or some other squad, which I’d hate. I love working with you and our team, and you know that.”

“I do, but there may come a time when it would be better for you to go your own way.”

“I don’t want to talk about that. I’ve got enough on my plate right now without adding that to it. I like things just the way they are, and if I’m never anything more than a detective, I’ll be perfectly fine.”

“You could be much more than a detective, and I don’t want you to miss out on opportunities because of your loyalty to me.”

“I’m not missing out on anything.”

“Freddie—”

“I heard you, and I appreciate your whole if-you-love-something-set-it-free speech, but I’m good right where I am. Now, we need to figure out who Colleen is and what’s become of her husband.”

“Let’s get to it.”

They hadlunch delivered while they worked the phones and sifted through the paper bomb trying to figure out who Colleen was.

Sam was looking through information gathered from the Blanchet house by the Crime Scene detectives when she came upon a file folder marked “Confidential.” She checked the inventory sheet the CS officers had attached to the documents they’d taken from the house. The folder it was in had been found inside a file cabinet in Marcel Blanchet’s home office.

“What’s this?” Sam held up the file folder so Freddie could see it. “Inventory says it was found in Marcel’s home office.”

“I haven’t seen that. Where was it?”

“With the Crime Scene stuff.”
