Freddie and Gonzoreturned to HQ and caught up with the rest of the squad, who reported nothing of substance from the other parents who’d commented on social media posts about Eloise.

“They were definitely bent out of shape by her bursting onto the scene two years ago, when the other girls had been together for years, but they have alibis that check out, and all of them expressed believable grief about the deaths of four innocent kids,” Green said.

“I think that’s a dead end,” Gonzo said. “The parents resented Eloise, but they didn’t kill her.”

“Agreed.” Freddie shared what they’d learned from the women who’d sued Dr. Blanchet and updated them on what they’d heard from his colleagues. “The autopsy report showed that Mrs. Blanchet also had gunshot residue on her hands, so we’ll be digging deeper into her tomorrow.”

“I’m still stuck on him jacking off on his patients,” Detective O’Brien said with a cringe.

“It’s disgusting,” Detective Charles said. “And such a violation.”

“We don’t like any of them for bringing a gun to the doctor’s house?” Detective Green asked.

“Not so much,” Freddie said. “They were all very upset about the dead kids and had been looking forward to their day in court with the lawsuit.”

“His life was about to explode,” Gonzo said. “If someone killed them, how is it not related to that? What do we have on the gun?”

“It belonged to Blanchet,” Charles said. “He bought it legally two years ago.”

Freddie sighed. “It keeps coming back to him.”

“Yes, it does, but it’s still possible that’s what someone wants us to believe,” Green said.

“I agree,” Freddie said. “Go home, everyone, and get some rest. We’ll pick it up in the morning.”

After the others had left, Freddie took a seat in his cubicle, determined to finish reading the autopsy reports before he left for the day.

He took a call from Elin. “Hey, babe. How was your day?”

“It’s not over yet. They asked me to teach a spin class tonight because the instructor is out sick. Do you care if I’m late getting home?”

“No problem. I have to stay late, too.”

“I’ll pick up something for dinner and see you at home around eight?”

“I’ll be there. Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

With time to work, Freddie got busy with the autopsy reports, reviewing everything they’d learned thus far and making notes for the next day.

“You need to eat something, sweetheart,”Avery said as he stood at Shelby’s hospital bedside. Her sister had come to take Noah after he was released. The doctors were worried about Shelby’s state of mind and had determined she should spend another night under their care.

She’d tried to rally for Noah’s sake, but now that he was gone, the blank look in her eyes terrified Avery. It was as if her fire had gone out, and without that…

“Shelby, honey, please…” He kissed the back of her hand. “Talk to me.”

She stared at the far wall without blinking. If she’d heard him, she gave no indication.

Avery’s phone buzzed with a text from Sam.How’s Shelby?

Not great. She’s sort of out of it.

Bc of meds?

She’s not on anything.

Oh… Are you worried?
