Because…what the hell was that?

For someone who doesn’t feel things, I sure just felt a lot.

There is a really good chance that I’m ruined.

Six Months Later

Being a person with type A personality, Mondays are a mix of both anxiety and motivation. I love the start of a fresh week because it’s a day to set new goals to conquer the week. But lately, it’s been giving me more anxiety than anything. It’s been six months since I saw my boss, Bill. He has yet to decide about who he is passing down Prestige Horizons to.

This is a huge deal for me because Prestige Horizons is one of the top real estate companies in New York. Our name is attached to hundreds—no, thousands—of buildings in the city.

Today, I’m on edge more than usual because Bill landed in New York for the summer. He and Todd are both coming here for a meeting. I haven’t been in the same room with them since the charity event in December.

To top it off, Avery comes back to work today. She took a small leave of absence after Peyton’s grandmother passed away. Everyone took her loss very hard. I wish I had gotten more of a chance to know her. From our trip to the shore house, I could tell she was an amazing woman and lived a fulfilling life surrounded by people who loved her.

Avery’s leave was only supposed to be for a month, but right before she was scheduled to come back to the office, her mom called her after a terrible fall down an icy flight of stairs. Her mom ended up with a broken hip and fractured leg, which needed three surgeries to fix it. So, Avery’s spent the last few months in Vermont taking care of her.

I needed the distance from her if I’m being honest. That night of the event, I lost control with her. We ended up having sex in the supply closet. If that’s what you even want to call it, because if that was sex, then I’ve been doing it wrong all my life. The thought of her convulsing around me, the sound of my name falling from her lips, and the face she made when she lost control is permanently ingrained in my brain. There's no way I can replicate that feeling with anyone else.

Beyond that… the office feels different. It’s quiet and sullen without her. She’s got the personality that lights up any room she’s in. I had hired a temporary assistant who was punctual and organized, but no one goes above and beyond the way Avery does. I found myself staring into her office space more times than I can count forgetting that she wasn’t there. Making me question so much during our time apart.

I’m saved from my thoughts of her with a knock on the door.

“Hey you,” Jessica says in her flirty tone she uses with me.

Jessica is one of my agents in the Manhattan office. She doesnothide her attraction for me very well. She keeps it permanently painted on her face, along with the gallon of make-up she wears every day. She’s a pretty girl, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that her eagerness to drop to her knees in front of me is justtoomuch. I don’t do desperate chicks. Especially the ones that I can tell are only after my money.

“What’s up?” I reply with a flat tone. Yes, I’m a grumpy bastard at work.

“I have the reports from last week for you,” she says in a playful tone. Then throws in a wink for good measure.

“You can email these to me, Jessica.”

“I know.” She pauses, fluttering her eyelashes. “But I thought I would see if you needed anything this morning with Bill and Todd coming in.”

“No, thank you. Ms. Woods will take care of it when she gets in.”

Her eyes travel to the other side of my office that has floor to ceiling glass doors connecting to Avery's office. As my firsthand assistant, her office is separated from mine with nothing but a glass wall, which offers neither of us privacy. Another reason I am thankful she took some time off.

“Looks like she's not here… yet again,” she says that last part barely above a whisper and proceeds to roll her eyes.

“Is there a problem, Ms. Klein?”

“No,sir,” she draws out the last word in a very seductive manner. It should make my cock twitch, but it doesn’t when it comes from her lips.

“That's what—”

“I’m sorry I’m late, sir.” Avery smirks from the doorway. Her hands are crossed over her chest as she leans on the frame.

Now, when it comes fromthoselips, it has my cock ready and standing at attention.

Every effort I have made to get this girl out of my head has gone out the window as I scan her from head to toe across the room. The first thing I notice is her long blonde hair and her natural beauty showing in her face. Almost like she decided on no make-up for today, which she most certainly doesn’t need. She’s wearing a tight pencil skirt, similar to the one she wore in her first interview. Her white button up blouse might as well be invisible, because I can see her black lace bra right through it.

The spunk has returned, that’s for sure. She looks almost refreshed from her time off.

Deciding to look away from her before my face gives away my thoughts, I look to Jessica. “Anything else you need, Ms. Klein?”

“No, that was all.” Her eyes bounce between Avery and me in question.
