My eyes flutter shut as I tip my head into his palm still on the side of my face.

“I love you, Avery.”

With one last kiss, Marc is out the door.

Leaving me standing there speechless.

Eager to tell him how much I love him.

Fearful for what would come of it.

Worried I might have just screwed up the best thing that’s ever happened to me by not saying it back when I had the chance.

I haven’t slept well since I left Avery’s apartment on Sunday. Between telling her how I really feel, and the fact I want her in my bed with me, wrapped up in my arms every single night has had me tossing and turning all hours of the night.

It doesn’t help that I’ve been working out of the Bronx office the last three days, which means I haven’t had a chance to see her at all.

It’s Wednesday so I’m having drinks with Thomas at Moore’s tonight. Oliver is… who knows where. And Logan is picking up overtime since he’s so close to nailing his promotion to chief.

“Hey, Marc,” Thomas says as he takes the seat across from me at the table. “Not busy here tonight.”

“Yeah, for once.” I scrub at my chin. “How’s it going?”

“Busy as shit. That deal I told you about a couple weeks ago blew up in my face. The building was not worth what we were planning to invest in it. Turns out, it was littered with mold. We pulled out so fast.”

“No pun intended.” I laugh.

“You’re sick.” He shakes his head. “How was the mountains?”

“Let’s just say when I left there, I was ready to purchase real estate.”

“No shit?”

I take a sip of whiskey. “Seriously. Bill was right. It’s the perfect place for a getaway from the busy city life. The phone service up there’s horrific, but when you need some peace, that’s what you need. I’m considering getting a place that’s big enough for the family.”

“Your family?” He gives me a knowing grin as if he can predict where this conversation is going.

“TheFord family, not necessarilymyfuture family,” I say, emphasizing the fact that it would be a place for anyone to use. “I think once I find something, we can plan a family trip up there. I know a realtor in the area who is checking out some listings with multiple bedrooms.”

“That sounds awesome, Marc. Good for you.”

“It should be great.” The waiter comes and we order another round of drinks. “How’s the wedding planning going?”

He groans, “Ugh. Don’t even get me started.”

“That bad?”

“It’s just a lot now that we’re down to the wire. I’m glad that we decided to keep it a small and intimate ceremony with just close friends. But even as a small wedding, it’s still a pain in the ass making sure everyone is where they need to be. Mom doesn’t come in from wherever the hell she is until the day of the rehearsal dinner.”

“I’ve barely heard from her all summer,” I admit. “I don’t even know where she is.”

“Who knows. But I’ll warn you.” He points a finger in my direction. “She’s bringing a date.”

“Oh shit. That’s…good. Right?”

“I hope so.” He shrugs.

“Everyone deserves something good to happen to them…” I trail off.
