Shit. If you asked Dean this question, his answer would be that he’s seeing someone exclusively. I wouldn’t call us boyfriend and girlfriend but I’m not out with other guys either.

“Yes,” I decide to answer. “It’s nothing serious, but yes, I am seeing someone.”

“How long?”

“Not long. It’s new.”

“You need to break it off with him.”

“Excuse me?” I snap. “You can’t tell me what to do and just order me to break up with the guy when I didn’t even agree to this.”

“You just said it wasn’t serious.” He grins.

“Marc…” I pinch my eyebrows together, and my hands land on my hips.

“I’m desperate, Ave. Whatever you want, consider it yours. It’s only until the end of the summer because Bill promised a decision by then. Besides, he seems to think we’re still planning our wedding.”

“That would have been a good time to tell him that we called it off. You know, make something up.”

“Yeah, because that wouldreallymake him want to pass the company to me,” he scoffs and adds an eye roll for extra measure.

I’m stunned speechless for the first time in my life. I am not the girl who is ever speechless. In fact, I am the girl who always has a lot to say and a quick come back for everything.Dammit, Marc.

“Here’s what's going to happen, Marcus.” I take one step towards him with my hands still glued to my hips. “I’m going to walk my ass into that little box of windows over there, sit at my desk and finish my work for the day like the good little assistant I am. Then I’ll think about this. I mean, reallythink about this because it’s a lot to ask—”

“I know, Ave. I am so sorry to have to put you in this position. But—”

“Don’t cut me off.” I raise a finger. “I will think about this and decide by tomorrow morning when I come in. Got it?”

“Yes,” he sighs. “But I hope you say yes.”

I don’t say anything back to him as I grab my bag and walk over to my desk to get my work done for the day. Once I’m settled, I decide to shoot a quick text to the girls.

SOS. Old Jose for dinner tonight.

Kali

Duh. It’s Tuesday.

Peyton

I can meet up tonight.

We’re going to need margaritas with a side of tequila shots.

Kali

Oh boy…

My boss has lost his mind.

Peyton

I can’t wait to hear this one…

The day dragged on slower than usual. Marc had back-to-back meetings and then had to oversee a project downtown, so our paths didn’t cross before I left the office for the day.
