As soon as the words leave my mouth, she directs her gaze at me and I can see tears forming in her eyes. She blinks aggressively to attempt to hold them back.

“Talk to me, Avery.”

“It’s nothing, Marc.” She swipes a tear that escapes. “What can I help you with?”

“Nothing until you tell me what’s going on?”

“It’s nothing,” she snaps as she averts her gaze to anywhere but me. “I’m sorry. But it’s nothing.”

“Avery.”

“If you must know, I got my period yesterday and I always get extra emotional on the second day. My stomach is killing me, I’m bloated as fuck, and I just want a bag of salt and vinegar chips but the stand downstairs was out of them when I was on my way in.”

“Is that why you were late today?”

“Yes. I had to have a cry session in the bathroom over a stupid bag of chips. Is that okay with you?”

I try to hold back my laughter over the emotional outburst, but I know what women go through each month. I feel for them, because it must be so difficult to go through such a range of emotions.

I decide not to reply to her at all, instead I pull out my phone to make a phone call.

“Fred,” I say into the phone from her doorway. “I need you to do me a favor. Can you run to the local pharmacy and pick me up a few things?”

“Marc—” Avery starts, but I cut her off with a finger in the air.

“Yes. Thank you,” I continue. “I need a heating pad. Get the fancy one that wraps around the stomach that is designed for cramps. I also need a box of the Midol tablets. Lastly, I need you to get me a giant bag of salt and vinegar chips. If they don’t have it there, find it somewhere else.”

I turn to look at Avery while Fred confirms the few things I need in my ear, and she is swiping another tear from her eye.

“That will be all. Thank you so much, Fred.” I hang up and pocket my phone.

“You didn’t need to do that.” She shakes her head. “I was going to go on my break.”

“I saved you a trip.”

“Thank you, Marc.”

“Of course.” I nod. “If it doesn’t help, I think you should take the rest of the day off. I would send you home right now, but I know you and your insane work ethic, and you won’t leave unless I shove you out this door.”

“You’d be right about that,” she scoffs. “I’m used to this. Happens every month, remember? I just got a little bat shit crazy over the chips not being available theoneday that I want them.”

“I got you.”

Three words. They slipped out but they hold so much more meaning than I meant for them to hold. I meant that I got her on the chips, but does she know I’ve got her in all other aspects? I think she feels the same way because the look she shoots in my direction is one mixed with lust and confusion.

“Listen, I hate to bring this up today when you’re going through what you’re going through…” I hesitate to continue. The small smile on her face tells me I can though. “But Bill called.”

“Where do we need to be?”

“First of all, thank you for being so good with all of this and willing to jump at what he needs.” I smile. “He invited us to dinner at his house Friday night. Cathy wants to make ham and scalloped potatoes. Plus, she apparently has a famous apple crisp recipe that she is dying to make.”

“You don’t have to tell me twice. I’m there,” she squeals. “I can fuck up some scalloped potatoes and some apple crisp. I’ll bring a tub of vanilla ice cream, because you can’t have warm apple crisp without vanilla bean ice cream on top.”

“I’ve never had it.”

“OH MY GOD, MARC! How have you never? It’s an orgasm in your mouth.”

That makes my dick twitch.
