“She’s ready to run with whatever we have to do. Which I have to say, surprises me a lot for how reluctant she was when I first presented her with the idea of keeping this ruse up for the whole summer. Except I don’t know how she will actually react when it’s time to put up the act.”

“That girl is a fucking trip.” Oliver laughs.

“I allowed myself to get way too close to her at the office, and she seems hesitant with the way she responds. Almost like she’s holding back.”

It’s like she wants to touch me back, she wants me close. I can also feel the wheels in her mind spinning circles trying to figure out what’s real and what’s fake. Maybe hesitation is the wrong word to use? But it just felt… off.

“How was it when you two kissed?” Logan asks.

“We haven’t—”

“Don’t even fucking tell me,” Logan cuts me off. “You mean to tell me, that you two are set up to be this fake engaged couple for the summer and you haven’t practiced kissing yet? How do you expect this to work?”

Oliver leans back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest before he says, “I’m with Logan here. This won’t work.”

“Would you fuckers let me finish?” I throw my arms out in defense. “No kissing was actually her number one rule for this agreement. She was dead set on it and explained it in a way that sort of made sense.”

Logan leans in with a grin plastered on his face. “Explain it to me. Because I’m not following.”

“She asked how often you see people making out in front of their boss or out in public. You don’t, really. She said there is no need to practice it or make it a thing because we won’t need to kiss or make out in front of him.”

“That still doesn’t make sense to me.”

“She did say if I felt completely pulled to show affection of any kind, that I can give her a kiss on the forehead.”

“Ohhhh,” Oliver coos with an eye roll. “So spicy.”

“I’m just thankful as shit she’s even agreed to doing this for the entire summer with me. I’m running with whatever she gives me.”

“Yeah, you got a point,” Logan agrees. “She’s missing out on hot girl summer being tied down to your ass.”

“Asshole.” I punch him in the shoulder. “I won’t lie, though. I am nervous as hell about how this night will go down. We laid down the groundwork of what we will say and do, but we truly don’t know what will happen when we get there.”

“You think it’s gonna be awkward?” Logan asks.

“Without a doubt.” I nod aggressively. “It’s going to be awkward as fuck.”

“Color me curious,” Oliver interrupts, leaning in close with his elbows on the table, chin perched in his hand, with a smirk on his face. “What were her other rules to this agreement?”

“No kissing was her first rule,” I say after taking a long sip of whiskey. “No seeing other people was number two.”

“Avery set that rule?” he asks, surprised.

“She did.”

“Look at the queen of casual being all exclusive. Go Avery.” Logan raises his glass as if to cheer with a toast to her when she’s not even here. “Was that all the rules?”

“Her final rule was…” I pause, rubbing my forehead uncomfortably. “Don’t fall in love with her.”

Both men look at me with shock in their eyes before they turn to look at each other with knowing smirks.

“What’s that look for?”

“Does she know who she asked that of?” Logan starts.

“She asked the man who would give anything to have a wife and kids, tonotto fall in love with her,” Oliver adds.

“And not for nothing… as wild as Avery is, she’s easy to fall in love with.” Logan shrugs a shoulder. “She’s fun to be around and hot as fuck. Hell, I thinkIlove her.”
