“I’m going to try and set her up with that same one I took before I started,” I add. “I think with her personality, organization, and love for making people see things clearly… that she needs to get it done sooner than later. The next class starts in September so I’m going to push her to register for that one.”

“That program is one of the best for sure.” Bill nods enthusiastically. “When I saw that on your resume, I knew you learned from the best and would be an asset for Prestige Horizons. Now look at you.” He throws his arms out. “You’re the top agent I have on my team.”

“Thank you, Bill.” I clear my throat. “I have the best mentor.”

“Seems like Avery is going to have a great mentor as well.” Cathy winks.

“I certainly will,” Avery replies.

“I’m hoping you plan to join Prestige Horizons after the course.” Bill throws in. “I can see this power couple taking over the city. Right, Cathy?”

Cathy’s eyes bounce between Avery and me. The way she has done so many times tonight. It makes my skin crawl if I’m being honest. You can tell just by being around the two of them for a short period of time, that she wears the pants in this relationship. Bill is a force to be reckoned with in business, but when it comes to Cathy, he willingly bends to her. I firmly believe that the final decision will be up to her.

“I can see it,” Cathy says hesitantly.

“The organization skills are a big plus too,” Bill says.

“I’ve never seen anyone more organized than Avery. The first time she came over to the penthouse, she reorganized my pantry.” I laugh remembering she said that tidbit about herself.

Bill covers his mouth to laugh, while his eyes widen in shock. “She did not! That is hysterical.”

“What can I say?” Avery says with conviction. “I love organization. I’m sort of a freak when it comes to it. I like seeing things neatly in a row on a shelf and easy to find. One day, I even color coordinated his work calendar based on the location of his meetings. Different color for different locations of his three buildings he works out of. His schedule was a mess before me.”

“Doesn’t your assistant do that for you?” Bill questions.

Avery isnotsupposed to be my assistant. Bill has no idea that she already works for Prestige Horizons, and I want to keep it that way. Office romance is frowned upon in a lot of the city. Once we’re “married”, the terms change, though.

“She does. She was out for a couple weeks when she had surgery. Some kind of carpal tunnel surgery that put her out for a few weeks,” Avery lies, knowing damn wellshe’sthe assistant. “I wanted to help ease some of the stress he had at work during that time.”

“Seems like you two make a great team,” Bill states confidently.

“We really do.”

Cathy moves to clean up the dessert dishes. She made a whole tray of the apple crisp and put extra in a to-go container for us. I already can’t wait to have more when I get back home tonight.

“We should probably head out,” I announce as I stand from the kitchen table. “It’s getting late, and we have an hour drive back to the city.”

“Of course.” Bill stands up from his seat. “We can’t thank you two enough for coming over for dinner. It’s been a great night.”

“It really was. Dinner was delicious, Cathy. Thank you so much.”

“Of course, honey. You are welcome here anytime.” She goes in for the goodbye hug. “Besides, it seems like we have a lot of wedding planning to do.”

Avery stands and is immediately at my side. I wrap an arm around her so naturally. Something my body did without thinking earlier tonight. This time, my body betrays me again as I dip down to drop a quick kiss to her head.

I feel her body melt into my side more. She wraps her arm around my waist as if she were hugging me, and not wanting to let me go. Not wanting me to leave her side at the moment.

A feeling so new for the type of relationship we have.

“That we do,” I say with a smile. “We’ll have to have you over to the penthouse one night very soon to help us with some details.”

“I would love that!” Cathy beams with excitement as she clasps her hands together. “I know you two don’t know me very well at all. But consider me your unofficial wedding planner.”

“Cathy.” Bill's tone is much more serious. “You can’t just plan their entire wedding.”

“She absolutely can.” Avery chuckles next to me. “I am not good at any of this stuff and I’d be beyond thankful for any help.”

“How about we plan for you two to come by after the Fourth of July weekend? I don’t have my calendar on me right now. But from what I remember off the top of my head, I’m free the whole week after that.”
