“Oh please.” She waves him off. “Call me Janice. Or Jan.”

“Why are you up so early, Mom?” I question her.

“I’m always an early riser. You know that.” She makes her way to the kitchen to pull out the same cold brew that I just had out.

“Peyton has that hazelnut syrup you like for your coffee.”

“Amazing,” she moans, as if she’s already taken the first sip of coffee. Any good coffee drinker will tell you, that first sip really is heaven.

“Well, I’m going to hit the shower,” Marc says. Scratching the back of his head as if he doesn’t know where to go from here. “You two enjoy your day.” And he’s out of the kitchen without a passing glance back.

My mom says as she stares down the hallway with a furrowed brow. “Is he alright?”

“He’ll be just fine.” I grin.

By mid-morning, I finally jump in the shower. I would be lying if I said I didn’t get myself off. Marc got me so fucking worked up this morning that I was still feeling the throb in my vagina hours later.

However, I had to get ready quickly. We planned a girls’ brunch for my mom, Peyton, Kali, and I since my mom goes back to Vermont later tonight. Peyton knew I wanted to spend as much time as I could with her since I most likely won’t see her again until the wedding.

“I’ve never been here,” Kali says. “What’s good?”

“Just about everything,” Peyton answers.

Peyton picked this spot because she claims they have the best waffles she’s ever had, aside from the ones Tommy makes her. They have a wide variety of specialty pancakes and waffles that are either loaded with gooey hazelnut spread goodness or topped with fruit and whipped cream. Plus, they have a specialty vegan section of the menu, which of course caused her to fall head over heels in love with this place. It’s rare you have places that cater to that.

“I’m such a hoe for pancakes,” I groan as I read the menu.

“They have chocolate chip.” Peyton winks. “I know those are your all-time favorite.”

“The way to my heart is always food, babe.”

The waiter comes and we order a round of mimosas while we each order different types of pancakes. No good brunch can go without a good mimosa. It’s just facts.

“So…” my mom starts. “Is anyone going to tell me about this Marc character? He was a little odd this morning.”

“What do you mean?” Peyton questions.

“I used the back door to come into the kitchen so I could make coffee and not wake anyone up. Thank you by way, Peyton. The hazelnut syrup you have is to die for.” She smiles toward Peyton. “Anyway, he was acting all awkward. Kept rubbing the back of his head. And dare I say he seemed… nervous?”

“That’sveryweird.” Peyton’s eyes narrow towards me. “Was anyone else there? Or was he alone.”

“This wild child.” She giggles as she hikes a thumb in my direction.

“That makes sense.” Kali rolls her eyes.

“What? Why?” Mom asks.

“I’m going to let you tell her.” Kali sits back and crosses her arms over her chest. She can’t help but laugh.

No. I, in fact, have not told my mom about the little situation with Marc and what’s happening this summer. We have barely had time to get on the phone with each other, let alone discuss the fact that I stupidly agreed to be someone's fiancé for the summer.

“You see…” I start. And then the waiter comes with our drinks. “Oh, perfect timing, kind sir.”

I take a long swig of the mimosa, chugging it like its water.

“Continue,” my mom urges.
