“How’s that taste?” he asks.

“Perfect.” I swallow the mixture, my throat suddenly going dry. I press off the counter, which forces him to take a step back. “You try.” I scoop up some of it with a spoon and bring it to his lips. His stare burns through me as he opens up and takes a bite himself. I can’t help but smile at him as he does it.

He groans, his eyes fluttering closed. “Shit. That’s good.”

“We make a good team.” I laugh, before I realize the words I’m saying hold more weight than intended.

“We do.” He smiles. “We really do.”

Thirty minutes later, the apple crisp is fully done and Thomas’ housekeeper? Chef? I don’t know what her title is… but Rosie had dropped off the dinner she prepared for us. We both feel more relaxed thanks to some champagne for me, and whiskey for him.

However, the sinking feeling in my gut that’s causing my stomachache hasn’t left. It’s worrying me because I want to be able to enjoy dinner. I’ve had Rosie’s food with Peyton before and it’s elite cooking.

There’s a knock on the door, and Marc snaps his head to me, as if to silently ask if I’m ready.

“Game time, baby.” I clap my hands together.

Bill beams as soon as Marc opens the door to let them in. “Marc!”

“Welcome.” He opens his arms allowing them to enter the door. “How was the drive in?”

“It wasn’t bad at all. Lucked out with no traffic being a Wednesday.”

“I brought goodies with me,” Cathy chimes in, lifting a canvas tote bag she’s holding in her hand. “It’s got information about a couple of venues, florists and entertainment here in the city. If we’re going to do this, we’re going to do thisright.”

I look at Marc, forcing a smile that I’m sure looks as fake as ever. I had completely forgotten in my sexual haze of yesterday, that he said he told them I wanted to meet to discuss helping us with wedding plans.

“Amazing,” I finally choke out. “I can’t wait to go through all of this.”

“We’re so grateful for your help, Cathy,” Marc adds.

“Oh it’s nothing.” She waves her hands in the air as she doesn’t want the acknowledgements. “Like I mentioned, I love this stuff. I’m retired and have nothing better to do anyway. This will bring me joy!”

“Let’s sit and get you guys something to drink.” Marc motions to the kitchen where we all proceed to gather.

Within minutes, Cathy has everything spread out on the kitchen island. She has lists of florists in the city, venues that have great reviews and DJ’s that play the best music. She takes the time to explain each one to me.

“This is all so overwhelming.” It’s not a lie. If I was really getting married, this would be so damn helpful. But it’s overwhelming, even for a fake bride-to-be.

“Once you nail down the groundwork and check the big things off your list, it will be easy peasy.” She giggles in her seat.

“Thank god we have you.”

“What are your plans for after the wedding? Are you two planning on having kids right away or waiting a little while?”

The question throws me off guard. Kids? God, never in my life did I want to have kids.

“Oh no.” I shake my head. “Kids aren’t in the cards for me.”

Marc wraps his arm around my shoulder, giving me a tight squeeze as if to silently say, wrong answer.

“Yet,” I quickly add, forcing a smile. “They aren’t in the cards for me yet.”

Cathy’s eyes bounce between me and Marc. “I see.” Curiosity fills her face as she studies us and what is really happening here.

“We’re going to wait a little after the wedding. I think it will be good to get some traveling in, maybe look into a house outside of the city and set some roots down before we start our family.”
