“Would you believe I’m actually from Vermont? The cold weather should run in my blood with all the snow they get. Yet here I am, still not used to the snow or cold weather.”

“Wow,” Bill nods. “I love the mountains myself but can understand the cold being too much,” he says before turning his direction back to Marc. “I’m pleased to meet your better half.”

I feel Marc turn his head to look down at me, which causes me to tip my head up to him. He’s putting on an excellent show of affection. I can see the adoration in his eyes that pairs perfectly with the smile on his face. He looks down at me with lust, like a proud fiancé would. His acting is so good that it’s confusing me as to what’s real and what’s not. An uneasy feeling creeps into my gut as he pulls me in closer to his side and tightens his grip on my waist.

“I’m happy she’s here,” Marc adds.

“How did you two meet?” Todd asks.

“Well—” Marc begins but is cut off when Todd’s phone starts ringing in his pocket. We are literally saved by the phone because this wasn’t something we discussed. What is our story on how we met?

“I have to take this.” He holds up his finger as if to sayhold that thought.

“I should go check on my wife,” Bill adds. “Enjoy the night, Marc. And it was lovely meeting you, Avery. I look forward to seeing you around more.”

Marc interlocks his fingers with mine as we begin walking towards the bar. My body is buzzing with a mix of adrenaline and nerves.

“You were amazing, Avery.” Marc smiles.

“I have to use the restroom,” I announce, ignoring his praise. I realize I didn’t actually use the restroom the first time I went. I have what I like to call a nervous bladder. Right now, that shit is acting up and I have toGO.

“Didn’t you just go?” Marc chuckles.

“Yes. Sorry. I have to go again.” I don’t wait for his response before I beeline it to the restroom hallway again. Not only do I need to pee, but I need to catch my breath. I don’t like these feelings that I can’t control, and his swoon I can’t escape.

Once inside, I do my business and find myself feeling the same way I did a little bit ago. Staring at myself in the mirror, figuring out a way to calm my erratic breaths. It’s just Marc, I remind myself. He’s the grumpiest of all grumps. This is all an act. It’s all fake.

When I finish up and exit the restroom, it’s like déjà vu seeing Marc standing right outside the door. Except this time, he has one arm holding himself up on the door frame and his head stares at the ground. He doesn’t lift his head to speak and doesn’t move from the position he’s in. He’s a brick wall that has me trapped in the doorway.

“What’s going on in that head of yours, Avery?”

“That you’re in my way, Marcus,” I snap back, trying to ignore how hot the man standing in front of me is.

I take a step towards him, thinking that he will move out of my way but he doesn’t. My body heats up as I stand inches away from him, so close that if I move any closer, my body will brush up against his. As if it happens in slow motion, he removes his hand from the door frame and rests it on the hollow of my neck. His thumb grazes my cheek again before his gaze meets mine.

“That’s not what you’re thinking,” he says barely above a whisper. “Tell me what’s going on in that pretty head of yours, Princess.”

“You don’t want to know what’s going on in my head.”

“Oh, but I do.” The corner of his lip tips up.

I tilt my head up to meet his stare, and I watch his eyes turn from a light brown to gray. I bring my face as close to his as I can and feel him suck in a breath. He wants to play this game? Then I’ll play along, and I’ll play it better.

“I’ll tell you exactly what I’m thinking,” I taunt. “I’m thinking how I’m stuck here at this event with you, playing your game… when I could be somewhere else right now having someone rearrange my insides. I’m horny, Marcus.” I take note that he has yet to release the breath he sucked in. “I’m doing this and quickly realizing that I’m getting nothing in return.”

“What do you want?” he quickly interrupts my ramble.

I huff out loud before I pull myself out of his orbit. “Nothing that you can give me.”

I sidestep him and begin to walk down the hall when a strong hand circles my wrist and pulls me back towards him. The force of the pull causes my body to collide with his. My hands instinctively land on his chest to brace myself. I feel nothing but rock-hard muscle beneath the palm of my hands.

“Just tonight,” he says on a drawn-out exhale.

“Yes,” I groan in frustration. “I’m only playing your fiancé for tonight.”

He shoots me an award-winning smirk. “That’s not what I mean, Avery.” He pauses. Just before the grip on my waist tightens. “Just tonight. I will give you exactly what you need.”

My heart races at the thought of him pleasing me the way I want. Desire courses through every single inch of my body. My nipples pebble under my dress, and my clit begins to throb. I want that, I really do. But can Marc give that to me?
