Tate laughed. Myles responded. "Truth."

He ushered Everleigh to the bedroom where she grabbed her purse. "I won't bring my laptop. I don't know what she wants."

"That's fine. I can't imagine either."

They hurried from the room and through the kitchen. The instant they were buckled in the truck he headed them toward the construction site where Addy and Maya were on duty.

As he drove, his mind raced. What on earth could she want, and was this a diversion that could harm Everleigh?

He tapped the call icon on his steering wheel. "Hey, there."

"Addy. You don't think she's a diversion for something Craig has planned, do you?"

"We thought about that. Maya is out doing a sweep right now. I'm watching her on camera."

"Where's the woman?"

"She's hiding in the woods. She won't come out."

"How did she make contact with you?"

"I was doing a sweep and she tossed pebbles from the woods. I called out to whoever it was and she whispered that she couldn't be seen. I told her I wasn't coming in there without some proof she was alone. She stepped to the edge of the woods and walked a distance along the road out of sight. We chatted across the road."

"And you believe her?"

"We both feel her fear is genuine. Whether it's fear that Craig will punish her if she doesn't do this or if he'll punish her if he finds out are both different fears. In the dark and without backup, we can't tell. But our job is to protect the base right now. That's why I called, plus she specifically said Everleigh's name."

He glanced at Everleigh, who listened intently but said nothing. "Okay. Almost there."

He disconnected the call and drove into the construction site and to the office. Addy walked out and a few moments later, Maya came from the back of the construction site.

"Let's go into the office to talk this out."

Upon entering the office, Henry grinned. "Everleigh Hayes, meet Maya Sager and Adelaide Masters. Ladies, Everleigh Hayes."

Everleigh shook both of their hands, smiling as she did. She then began the conversation. "So, she asked for me. You know she's afraid, but are unsure the direction of her fear."

Maya nodded. "Yes. And, while I did a perimeter sweep again, I tossed rocks into the woods along the way to see if anyone moved or ran. Other than a bird or two, there was no movement."

Henry looked at the cameras on the computer screens in the office. "Show me where she is. I think Everleigh and I will get into the truck and drive to her. She'll be hidden and Everleigh will be safe. If Craig is planning something, I'll take off."

Maya and Addy both nodded. Addy said, "That works. Put on a comm unit."

Henry pulled one from a box in a locker they kept inside the office. "Comm on," he said. Both women gave him a thumbs-up.

Turning to Everleigh he nodded. "You don't get out of the truck. You don't open the door, no matter what she says. Got it?"

"Yes."

"I’m serious, Everleigh. No matter what."

"I understand."

He ushered her to the truck once again and drove to the spot where the woman was supposedly hiding.

He turned the truck so he could take off if needed and lowered his window.
