"I hadn't thought of that. But we could start calling her by her current name with kindness and erase the pain."

He turned to face her. Leaning forward he kissed her forehead. "You are the sweetest person I've ever met."

She sighed. Then she looked up at him. "Did Lara know a veterinarian?"

"She did. I have the number of Dr. Emily Zsidai. I'll call her now and explain what we have. If she thinks she should be looked at tonight, then I'd like to let her come out. Is that alright with you?"

"Yes. Please."

He tapped the text from Lara and then the number for Dr. Zsidai. "Dr. Emily."

"Hello, Dr. Emily. My name is Henry Delany, my girlfriend and I are out at the Evans’ farm."

"Oh, dear."

"So you've been called out here before?"

"Sadly. What happened?"

"We have a horse here with open welts. I'm not sure if there's something we can do until morning or if you need to see her right away."

"I'll come right away so infection doesn't set in. It'll take me about fifteen minutes to get to you."

"We'll be here."

He pocketed his phone, took Everleigh's hand and sauntered to a bale of hay near their stall. "I think we need to have a talk."

They did. They absolutely did.

"I agree."

"Dr. Emily will be here in fifteen minutes. We can start our discussion now or wait."

"We can start now. I got an email. Casper has another job for me."

His shoulders slumped and it seemed as though his eyes watered. Hers did just saying that out loud.

"Are you taking it?"

Her head jerked up. No one had ever asked her that question before. She'd never considered that she could take a job or not. "I haven't responded. Can I say no?"

"Yes. You can say no."

"But what would I do? I have money saved, but eventually I'll have to make more."

"I'm going to have seven horses to take care of. They're afraid of me, but not of you. You have a way with them. Stay with me. Live with me. Take care of the horses. Get them healthy. Once they're healthy we'll see about breeding them or what we can do to make money with them.”

"But, in the meantime I won't be earning my keep."

"I just said, they're afraid of me. Of men. I need to rehab them. You can do that. Life is more than about ‘earning your keep’. Of course, there are living expenses and we have to work to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. But you’ve been a workaholic your entire life. There’s more to life. You need to start living it. Figure out what Everleigh likes to do in her spare time. That means actually having spare time."

"But I've never not made money. I've never..."

"Everleigh, I make good money. I have money in a trust fund that I've barely touched. We'll be fine. You'll have a home. A real home. And I'll have you. We'll be together and see if we like that."

A knocking sounded on the door then it creaked open. "I'm Dr. Emily."
