“I want to be that for him,” I admit. “The things he’s been through would break most people.”

“River copes with humor, food, and his fists.”

“You help him. You have been what holds him together. You shove away all the pain from your life and concentrate on keeping him safe.”

“He’s done as much for me, especially in the last few months. I couldn’t have done it without his crazy,” he chuckles.

We get dressed and walk slowly back to the house, our hands intertwined. It was peaceful to have an afternoon to simply relax. Oh, and the sex. I can’t forget about that.

As we lay there, I decided to return to work tomorrow. I need to keep up with my bills, and I can’t count on the money coming anytime soon. I’m afraid my wolves won’t approve, but I can’t let Gill, the nutcase uncle, keep me from paying my rent. I’ve been burned so many times in relationships, it’s hard to fully trust that this is going to work out. I need a back-up plan—just in case.

Maybe I let them spank me if it will soften the blow—for them, not me.

Chapter Fifteen

River

“Where did you get chicken nuggets?” Bash asks.

We gathered in Ryker’s office. Ryker and Bash welcomed Bishop and me. They also invited Harmony’s mates: Jax, the Alpha, and his brothers James and Blue. We discussed all the ways to kill my uncle. They may have used words likefind, capture, andrescue, but all I heard waskill, kill, kill.

“Do you want some? It’s a twenty-pack.” I hold out the box. “You don’t understand what kind of sacrifice it is to offer you one. Take it,” I urge, pushing it toward him. I must like Bash on some level. At least I can understand his pain; his lifetimes show in his eyes.

He looks at me oddly and takes a nugget. “Do we have any idea where to look?” he asks.

“Anywhere sparse, isolated, where he can cage shifters and chase them through the forest. He won’t be more than a hundred miles in any direction from here. He probably plans to take Ava and won’t want to be too far. He’s a lazy asshole.” I dip a nugget in ranch. Ranch is the best.

“I can search the area from the air, but it will have to be at night,” Bishop says. The guys were shocked when he walked in. Even though the vampires have lived many years, seeing a dragon in person is rare.

“Bash and I can cover ground fast without being seen,” Ryker says. “How's Ava dealing with this?”

“She cussed out my uncle on the phone. Called him out on his shit and basically said he had a small dick. She’s holding up,” I say gleefully.

“We all have found women with bigger balls than most men,” Ryker laughs.

“Are you going to change her?” Blue asks. Blue is one of Harmony’s mates and a panther. He is usually scowling and quiet. He has badass hair, blonde with blue tips. I would hate to go up against him in a fight.

“We hope to. She’s taking some time to adjust to the idea.”

“I don’t envy you the fight,” Jax, the panther Alpha, states.

“You should have seen her when I decided to change Serenity. She faced off with an angry vampire to make sure I had her permission,” Ryker says.

“She’s been spending time with Marie. Hoping to encourage her to get out of her shell,” James says.

“Who’s Marie?” Bash asks.

“You haven’t met her. She kept to herself and used to work for me,” Jax answers.

“She hides behind baggy clothes and glasses. She’s a beauty though, and extremely intelligent,” Blue explains.

“I can’t wait to meet your mate,” I say with relish to Bash.

“I will never have a mate.” His expression hardens.

“Never say never,” I sing.

“Never,” he says, glaring.
