“I will only pay you for the work you do,” I say calmly.

“Do you get paid?”

“Excuse me?” I narrow my eyes and come around my desk.

“You haven’t done shit lately,” he spits.

“That’s going to change. I can admit I’ve let things influence me. Not anymore.”

“Whatever. You should have never been given the title.”

“I apologize; I will apologize to the pack also,” I step closer. “You should accept it and move on with me.”

“Bullshit,” he starts.

I get in his face and hold his eyes. I deepen my voice, “You don’t want to do this, Marcus. Graciously accept my apology and get back to work. Do not show up late again, and never bring a woman to my garage.”

He tries to withstand my Alpha influence but fails. He tilts his head and submits reluctantly.

“Yes, Alpha,” he grits out.

“Good.” I let him go and stepped back. “Get back to work.”

He glares and stomps out.

Before all the shit with my family, I was well on the way to improving the pack. The last Alpha went crazy in the end and fucked shit up. When given a ruined empire, it takes even longer to shine it up. It was time to get back to it.

Fuck, I have a lot of work to do.

Chapter Three

Ava

My car is making a clunking sound. Also, a sputtering sound. Well, it was more of a sputtering, clunking sound.

Last night was a blast. Marie and I stayed at the bar until it closed. We stumbled out and into a cab drunk. She was hilarious when she was toasted. Of course, everything was funny when I drank. We shared, maybe a little too much, and danced until they kicked us out.

When I forced my body to get out of bed this morning, I realized I had forgotten to buy coffee and had to take another cab to get my car. I can’t go without coffee, so I hopped my messy ass into my car to get some. At first, I thought I might still be a little bit drunk and was hearing things. But after I got my dose of caffeine, the noise was still there.

I had to have a car. I couldn’t depend on hitching rides with friends. So, I called Harmony. Her brother runs a shop. She talks about him all the time and mentioned it before. The unfortunate thing about that was he was a wolf. I’ve never met him, but I feel like I know him from her stories.

I once met a wolf on a dating app. He was cute and built. He had very big hands. Of course, at first, I didn’t know he was a wolf. The more time we spent together, the weirder it became. He refused to sleep with me. Okay, so he didn’t come out and say that, but it was implied. I pushed when he avoided going past second base. I have a mirror; I know I have all the right parts in the right places. I shower. I didn’t understand his hesitation. So, fueled by sexual frustration, I finally snapped and demanded an explanation. He admitted he was a wolf and was waiting for his mate. Not wanting to get my hopes up, he halted our sexy times. I made him show me. Over and over again, since I couldn’t trust what I saw. He shifted five times. That’s when my world changed and expanded again.

I had been determined to be free of that world, but my car needed to be fixed. I could take it to a random place and hope they were good or take it to her brother and get the discount she promised me. My wallet will appreciate the sacrifice.

I had enough sense to go home first, shower off the alcohol fumes, and put on clean clothes instead of my pajamas. I try not to go anywhere without a decent outfit. Since it was a casual Saturday, I opted for tight jeans and a tank. I add my rings. I love them, and on the plus side, if I have to punch someone, it hurts more.

I pull into the lot of the garage, take a deep breath and climb out. I have passed the building a lot but never paid much attention. It is a brick building, one story, and spans half the block. There are five bays wide open. I am deciding whether to go in through what looks like the lobby door or the open doors when a man steps out. He grins at me and looks my body up and down, obviously liking what he sees. He steps out into the sun.

“Hey, sweets, what can I do for you?” he leers.

“I need to talk to Kerian,” I say.

“Figures,” he glowers. “Are you one of his women?”

“Not that it’s any of your business, no, I’m not. Is he here?” I stop a few feet away, hesitant.

“Yeah,” he says. He doesn’t make a move to get him.
