“Cupcake,” he breathes. “You look like a warrior.”

“I could say the same.” I nod to his naked body covered in blood. Not caring about it, I throw myself at him.

“Fuck, you scared the shit out of us,” he growls as he drops his forehead on my shoulder.

“I scared myself,” I say quietly. “I killed one of the hunters.”

“Good.” They all speak at the same time, and I let out a startled laugh.

“We need to move. Bishop is going to burn the place down with us in it if we don’t get to him,” Bash says.

I quickly grab my knife as River stands up, not letting me go. “He hasn’t found Gill yet. He’ll wait until he does.” River looks at Logan. “Are you with us?”

“Shit yeah,” he replies.

Bash takes the lead, and Logan stays close behind him. Bash tosses River some sweatpants. River refuses to put me down— though I don’t fight him on it—but he somehow gets the pants on without dropping me. Kerian stays close behind us, finding any excuse to touch me. I’m happy to give them control, finally feeling safe.

“How did you get through the witch's shield?” I ask my mates quietly.

“We didn’t. Serenity did.”

“Oh wow. I forgot she has witch blood in her.”

“She said the barrier was weak. She thought the witch was letting her guard down for her,” Kerian explains.

“She probably did. I met her. She didn’t want to do it.”

“We assumed that was the case. Witches are really private, and the good ones hide their powers normally,” Kerian confirms.

“We found another friend of yours, cupcake,” River smiles slightly. “Stephanie.”

“She was okay?” I’ve tried not to think too much about her fate.

“She was. We sent her to wait by the barrier until we could find you and disable the collars.”

“You made a lot of friends,” Kerian smirks.

I shrug. “Everyone needs friends. At first, I thought I could get them on my side, but Gill threatened them if they helped me.”

River hisses, “You met him? Did he touch you?”

“I met him, yes. He didn’t get close enough to touch me,” I assure him.

“Have you seen him since?” River asks.

I shake my head.

“Human up ahead,” Bash calls out quietly.

River and Kerian stop. Kerian steps in front of us and waits.

I’m surprised when Logan stays at Bash’s side. A hunter crashes through the trees, looking over his shoulder fearfully. He freezes when he notices he should be worried about what is in front of him. His mouth opens and closes, shocked.

Bash blurs behind him and forces his arms behind his back. “In a hurry, hunter?” he asks.

“The-re a-are an-an-imals,” he stutters.

“No shit,” Logan says dryly.
