Page 11 of Saving Her Vampire

“What is going on?” Ava asks, her voice shaky. That’s what I would like to know.

“It’s alright, cupcake,” River says, as he walks to Ava’s side.

“Bash, take it easy. You can’t deny the facts,” Ryker says.

“I can,” Bash growls. He looks like he’s in pain.

“You are an asshole if you do,” River says. He doesn’t seem concerned and rips open a bag of chips. River can eat anything at any time.

“What’s wrong?” I ask Bash. At the sound of my voice, he takes a step toward me but stops abruptly, as if his mind and body are fighting with each other. I’m curious and almost…eager.

“Are you going to tell her?” Ryker demands.

“Fuck,” he scowls.

“Alright, this is getting old. What the fuck is happening?” I shout. I have heard that when a vampire finds his mate, he can’t control himself; he has to be with her. So, either I am not his mate, or he doesn’t want me to be his mate. If I were a human that didn’t know about the world they live in, I would be freaked out, but I do know, and I need answers.

Suddenly, my back is against the wall, and Bash is towering over me. I gasp at the sudden situation I find myself in. “Who did that to your face?” His face was hard, and I saw his fangs when he spoke.

“I’m fine,” I whisper. I control the wince when my back connects to the wall. My heart is pounding, not in fear, but in anticipation.

“No,” he says.

“You say that a lot,” I state. His eyes widen briefly.

“Bash,” Ryker says. Bash only moves his head to growl over his shoulder at him and then turns back to me.

“Who?” he demands.

“He was dealt with,” I say.

“Not by me,” he says, narrowing his eyes.

“Of course not. I didn’t know about you until ten minutes ago,” I say. He doesn’t know how to deal with me; that is clear. He startled me but doesn’t scare me. My attention is fully on his harsh expression, and my desire is to ease him, not run from him.

“Please tell me,” he says—the word please obviously foreign on his tongue.

“Am I your mate?” I ask bluntly.

He tilts his head, his eyes searching my face. “What if you are?”

“Then you need to be nicer,” I inform him. I hear a startled laugh behind him.

“Nicer?” he frowns. He freezes as I run my finger slowly over his frown.

“I’m not what you pictured,” I say sadly. I’m okay with how I look, but I wish I were more right now. “It’s okay to be disappointed,” I whisper. I drop my arm to my side.

He looks confused. “Why would I be?”

“She thinks you don’t like how she looks, idiot,” River yells. Bash hisses at him.

“We should leave them alone,” Ryker suggests. He turns to me. “He won’t hurt you.”

I nod. I trust that he will tell me the truth.

“Fuck off,” Bash says. He waits until they leave, shutting the door softly. “What is your name?”

“Marie,” I say.
