Page 14 of Saving Her Vampire

I couldn’t allow her to stay in that place. The street lights were dark outside of the building. I could see everything clearly, but a human could not. I almost threw her over my shoulder and walked out after seeing the crappy stairs we had to walk up to get to her apartment. There was no security at all. The door she unlocked would be easily kicked in. The inside was worse. My head almost touched the ceiling, and the balcony door was old and didn’t have a lock.

Offending her was not my intention, but I know she was. The bond that I could feel forming would not let me leave her there. I had to have her behind my doors, safe and secure. If I had to kidnap her, I would have. Luckily she came easily, somewhat.

I remember Jax talking about a Marie. I knew Ava was friends with her, along with the whole group of women that were piling up, mated to the men I knew. I didn’t pay much attention to what they said, but one thing that stood out was that she was quiet and shy. I don’t know what those idiots saw in her, but that wasn’t it.

She had guts. She stood toe to toe with a white-haired vampire and didn’t blink. She let me hold her and kiss her—that kiss. I want to do it again and again. She tasted sweet. I wanted more. I don’t know how I will control myself when her sweet scent is all over my apartment.

I grab as many bags as possible and lead her into the building. I thankfully have a working elevator. The smaller space makes her scent stronger, and I clench my jaw, pushing away my need. I’ll have to drink more blood than usual until I turn her to keep myself from hurting her accidentally. I want a taste of her sweet blood. I can feel the burn in my throat. I’m acting like I did when I was first turned. This time I have no choice but to control my urges. She is important.

Her eyes widen as she watches me enter all the security codes to get in the door. I gesture for her to enter first. She takes one step and stops. I have to edge around her with the bags.

“You’re kidding, right?” she asks.

“I don’t know what you mean,” I say. I drop the shopping bags on the floor.

“This is where you live?”

“Yes,” I say. I look around but don’t understand what she is seeing.

“Of course it is,” she whispers. She laughs shortly. “My apartment could fit into the entryway.”

“Yes, I suppose it could,” I say, still not understanding her point. She looks at me with a tilt of her head.

“You aren’t being sarcastic,” she states.

“No,” I say slowly. She stated a fact, and I agreed with her. I know there is another meaning, but I don’t want to guess what it is. I’ve been isolated for so long; I prefer to be straightforward.

“Your home is gorgeous.”

“Thank you. It suits my needs.” I pick up the bags. “Follow me. I would rather you be in my room, but I will put you in the room next to mine. I haven’t been inside of it much, just to clean.”

“You clean?” she asks, surprised.

“That is surprising?” I ask.

“Yes, I would expect you to have a maid.”

“I don’t like other people touching my things. I usually clean as I make the mess; it saves time,” I explain. I open the door to where she will be sleeping. It is the same as the rest of the apartment. The bed is not as big as mine but still comfortable. There is a bathroom attached.

“Wow,” she mutters.

I watch her walk around the large room, touching things, her eyes darting everywhere. There isn’t a balcony in her room, but she can use the one on the bottom floor.

“Is it alright?” I ask.

“It’s great,” she says. “I won’t know what to do with all the room.”

“You have the rest of the apartment, too,” I say. “I don’t want you to think you have to stay in here.”

“I understand.”

“I’ll leave you to unpack. Use anything in here. Are you hungry?” I ask.

“No, I’m fine. I would love a shower. I have to work tomorrow, so I should probably get some sleep.”

“Of course,” I nod. “I want to come with you.”

“To work?” she asks.
