Page 28 of Saving Her Vampire

“I don’t think so, Mom,” I say. She wouldn’t know if I had any friends. I never brought anyone over to the house. I didn’t have sleepovers or boyfriends, but she seemed to know everyone in town, I would hear her gossiping with Dad. “You gave him my number?” I ask, annoyed.

“Did I do something wrong? He showed me the event flyer for the reunion. I thought you would want to see all your friends again,” she says, anxious.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” I reassure her. My mom would have the best intentions, even if she gave some random guy my number. “He said he was going to call?” I ask. Bash is scowling at my phone. I forgot he has super vampire hearing and has heard my mom's rambling.

“I did. He had a list of other names and numbers. He was excited to do the event.”

“Don’t worry about it.” I change the subject. “How is Dad?” My dad is a retired plumber and the most patient man on the planet.

“He’s stubborn as ever. He started another flower garden the other day—you know he has an obsession with gardenias. He thinks he can get down on his knees to weed and get back up,” she says, laughing. “I told him good luck.”

I ignore Bash’s sharp look at the word gardenia. “He’s not that bad,” I say, defending him. I knew my Dad had that obsession. Why would I want to continue with sexy times when I say the word?

“You don’t have to live with him anymore. If I didn’t love him so much,” she sighs.

“I know you do, Mom,” I say. “I look forward to seeing your garden.”

“Are you seeing anyone? We need grandbabies before we die.”

“Mom, you are not going to die.”

“You didn’t answer the question.”

I twirl my cup, avoiding Bash’s eyes. “I am. It’s new, and that’s all I’m going to say.”

“You should bring him to the house when you come. I can make something good to eat. Just warn him that your dad will grill him.”

I have to hold back the laughter, picturing my dad threatening Bash. “We’ll see. I have to go. I have to get to work soon.”

“Alright, dear. I love you. Please come soon,” she says.

“I promise. I love you. Tell Dad that I love him, too,” I say softly.

“Of course. Bye, dear.”

I slip my phone into my pocket and gather the courage to look at Bash. “Who is Sammy?” he asks.

“I have no idea. I’m not worried about it. I wouldn’t go to the event anyway. I don’t want to see anyone from high school.” I shudder. “It is a time I don’t want to relive.”

“She loves you.”

“She does. Dad is a big teddy bear. He would never threaten you,” I tease.

“Have you ever brought a guy home?”

“No,” I say, frowning.

“You don’t know how he will react,” he says, shrugging.

“Does that mean you’ll go home with me?” I ask, surprised.

“Maybe.”

“It makes me happy that you are open to it,” I admit.

“When do we have to follow Tabitha?” he asks.

“Soon,” I say, looking at the clock. “You aren’t going to stop me from investigating this?” I ask, suspicious. He wasn’t thrilled with the idea yesterday.
