I startle when I am placed on a bed. I struggle until I recognize the difference in beds and hear Bash’s soothing voice. There are others in the room, but I have no energy to open my eyes. I feel the tense vibes radiating from Bash and the others.

“I got you, baby,” Bash says. “I’m going to make the pain go away.”

I can’t move my lips to respond, so I nod my head or think I do.

“Ryker set the blood here.” He brushes my hair off my face. “This is going to hurt for a minute. I’m going to bite you and turn you. I need you to accept my blood.”

I nod again, ready to be like him. To be tied to him. I taste blood in my mouth and instinctively swallow.

I feel the sharp pain of teeth biting my flesh. I burn, and then I feel no more.

Chapter Twenty

Bash

She was trying to save me. It was laughable. This small slip of a woman was trying to save a vampire. The moment I saw her in that basement, barely standing, my heart broke. The only possible reason that I didn’t hear Sammy enter the basement was that I was so caught up in her broken, beautiful appearance. I will never forgive myself for not reacting the way I should have. The bullet wouldn’t have done much damage to me. To Marie, it was fatal.

She said she loved me. She loved a monster that failed her. She is the bravest woman I have ever met. I saw the binds on the bed. I wanted to know every detail she went through, but I had to get her through the transition first.

Turning into a vampire is simple. The human has to drink the vampire's blood; in turn, the vampire has to drink theirs and bite them, injecting them with their venom numerous times. The process can take days or minutes, depending on the person. Since I’ve never turned someone, I relied on Ryker to walk me through. I can already feel her within me. Ryker said I would know when it was enough blood and when she would wake as a vampire. I will feel her emotions and her life force as if my own.

“You’ve done all you could,” Ryker says softly.

“It wasn’t too late,” I state. At first, I thought it was. You can’t turn a dead human. Ryker would have had to kill me, too.

“No,” he agrees. “Now, you wait.”

“She wanted to save me,” I say.

“I heard that.” He puts his hand on my shoulder. “She is brave.”

“Stupid.” I snort.

“It’s not stupid to want to save the one you love.”

“She said that, too.”

“I heard,” he says, chuckling.

“It’s hard to believe,” I say, growling.

“You will.” He moves to the door. “Serenity would like to sit with her.”

“That’s fine,” I say, looking at him. “I need to go talk with Sammy.”

“I figured. I will be back with her, and we will both stay,” he says.

“Thanks,” I say quietly.

“What are friends for?” he says, spreading his arms wide.

“Asshole,” I say with no heat.

“Love you, too,” he says as he disappears.

My humor slides away as I turn back to watch my mate. I wish the circumstances of her change were different. It should have been about our Bond and joining together in a special way. My blood is already doing its job and healing her wounds. The bullet is being pushed out. It is a foreign object in her newly made body. My worry is easing. She will make it through the transition. She has to.

I’m curious to see how she will adapt when she wakes. Some do not adjust well to vampire life. The cravings can be overwhelming. The thirst for blood, for power, is something you must learn how to control. She’s lucky, though; I will be here to guide her like Ryker was for me.
