“Spy,” I reiterate, pointing at them sharply. “Holy shit.”

“Calm down,” Mom urges.

“This is too much,” I say, panicking. I rub my forehead.

“It’s not a big deal. We are the same as we always were,” Dad says.

“Why didn’t you tell me about vampires?” I ask, pacing behind Bash.

“We didn’t want to traumatize you.”

“Sure—” I snort.

“There is enough evil in the world at work that we didn’t want to confuse you or make you think we were crazy,” Mom says.

“I don’t know what to do with this,” I say.

Bash comes over to me, steps in front of me, and cups my cheeks. “Slow down. Concentrate on me. Take a deep breath.” He breathes with me, and when I’m calm, he takes my hands. “Come.” He pulls me to the kitchen and turns his back to my parents. He surrounds me, bending down to whisper, “You just got done killing a man. Did you ever think you would do that?”

“No,” I admit quietly.

“If your parents hadn’t shown up here, knowing what we are, would you ever have told them what you did?” he asks.

“No.” I sigh.

“They have been doing something that gave them a purpose, just like me. Not to say that I’m not shocked, but they did tell you. They haven’t been in danger, and if it’s up to me, they never will be.” He rubs his thumb across the frown lines on my forehead. “Visit with them while I call my friend. If he’s in trouble, I want to help.”

“Okay, thanks, Bash,” I say.

“If you’ll excuse me,” he says loudly, turning to my parents.

“Of course, I’m glad you are looking into it,” Dad says.

I stare at Bash’s retreating back. He’s worried about his friend. It’s hard to distinguish between our feelings. He’s blocking me as much as he can, but his anxiety is leaking through.

I turn back to my parents, seeing them in a totally different light. They appear to be the perfect older couple with nothing to hide. “You aren’t freaked out that I’m a vampire?”

“It’s a shock. We never expected it. When you told me about your boyfriend, the last thing I thought was it was Bash,” Mom says.

“We realized a long time ago that vampires are just people at their core, with extra abilities. Sure, they can be vicious if need be, but most of the time, it’s justified,” Dad says.

“How do you feel?” Mom asks, leaning forward eagerly.

“It’s hard to tell from one moment to the next. It’s not as difficult to adjust as I thought it would be. Bash has been wonderful; he’s guiding me and staying close.” I look up as if I can see through the ceiling to the bedroom where he is. I can hear the murmur of his voice but can’t make out any words. He’s whispering lightly, attempting to keep his conversation private.

“He’s honorable.” Dad smiles.

“He would be the first to disagree with you,” I say.

“He’s humble,” Mom says.

“Are you worried about his friend?” I ask.

“He is unpredictable. I just have a feeling about it,” Dad says.

“Why were you covered in blood?” Mom asks.

“Do you remember the man that came to your house? Sammy?”
