“She’s in your bed?” The monotone didn’t change.

“I’m monitoring her closely,” Walker said, voice grave enough that I almost believed him for a split second that that’s all this was.

Robert shook his head. “Braver man than I.”

Walker cleared his throat. “Best if?”

“Some assignment is found for the woman in question, near the border. Perhaps justified by the safety of the Guild until the date approaches. Elise and I would retire to that vicinity for the sake of our son, who will need a quiet environment while we reaffirm his Guild citizenship and the protections it affords him.”

And the Robert-speak didn’t stop; the man had an iron will. He was planning on putting me near the border and living there with Elise and Dmitri, far from the halls of power, and justifying it by saying he’d thoroughly indoctrinate Dmitri.

Liar, liar, pants on fire if he planned to have me nearby. But then again, Robert was a politician.

“I see,” Walker answered. “I’ll see who I can talk to. End call.”

Robert winked out. I rolled onto my side.

“We need to talk about that later,” I said. “Why is it urgent?”

He leaned over and kissed me. “Kara was interrogated without her parents. She told what she saw. It’s not admissible, but the information was passed upstairs.”

“Why did he call you? He hates me.”

“I know people. Robert’s not an easy man, Alys, but he hates slavery. He hates the inequity baked in our political system. But he also loves the law and believes in change from within.” He stroked my hair. “I think you’ve encouraged the hate a bit, too, haven’t you?”

I shrugged, struggling with mixed emotions. Gratitude was hard, and staying angry at Robert made him easier for me to deal with. I could like him, but that would make things weird.

“Robert has a good idea. But I have a few others I want to try before then. I’m more worried about Dmitri, but him, we have in hand. The child in question hasn’t even been conceived yet; we still have time.”

I sighed. “You’re still upset about that, aren’t you?”

An eyebrow went up. “That you’ve agreed to an act that killed twenty different battlemages one by one when they attempted it? I can’t imagine why I might be unhappy.” His tone was flatter than skinny unleavened camp bread.

Since the conversation would only go downhill from here, I ended it. Pushing him onto his back, my lips found his, and the world fell away. When the beating of my heart filled my ears, I had my way down his body, pressing kisses on his throat, his chest, and down his belly. His gaze was fixed on me when I moved lower and wrapped my lips around his cock.

He sucked in a breath, arching his back as I put my mouth to better use than pointless discussion. His fingers steered me lower as I bobbed on his incredible length, loving the taste and the feel of him in my mouth. When he groaned and shuddered, tugging my head up, I knew what he wanted.

Moving quickly, I slid up his body, pressed myself against him, and then slowly took him inch by delicious inch deeper until my whole body was vibrating with need. His hands found my hips as I worked myself on top of him, and his powerful thrusts in turn took us both over the edge until we were riding the waves of our pleasure.

Collapsing on top of him after, we laid together for as long as we could. Touching each other. Kissing each other. Knowing that soon we’d have to return to the chaos of our lives.

Which came to us sooner than we planned.

We both showered and dressed. Walker went to take care of some work, and I headed downstairs, having worked up quite an appetite. Elise had the news on when I came down for breakfast, her mouth tight and brow furrowed. Her hair was a little frizzy, too. I put two and two together, there must have been a bath this morning for Dmitri and Elise had taken it on alone. Brave soul.

“What’s wrong?” I poured milk over cereal. The newsreader, a woman whose sculpted prettiness was so inoffensive she might as well have no face of her own, blithered about Capitol’s wards in the moment before Elise answered. “Did you bathe Dimitri alone and regret it?”

“No, I let him pretend he was a sea monster, so it went okay.” She sighed. “Robert slept in his office. They’ve called a session of Congress. People saw an elf by the Halls, and there’s panic right now.”

I spooned up cereal to prevent myself from observing that elves were a hazard to farmers and craftspeople Outside all the time.

“Nothing about mercs attacking a sitting Representative in his home?”

Elise sighed. “Mentioned, but the elf appearance takes priority.”

As long as Dmitri was safe, the government panicking could be entertaining. Robert being away was a bonus.
