“Do they know you have access to their accounts?”

“None of your business. My family is not to be involved.” His low, angry tone reverberates in the stillness.

He pushes his chair back, fists resting on his thighs, moistening his lips, ready to keep going. A glare from Rebecca and his mouth snaps shut like a mousetrap.

“I’ve been accessing your laptop, but I also need to access your desktop. We can have our technician set it up remotely since I’ll be away for a few days.”

“The email accounts would be the same.”

I lift a shoulder. “There may be other things we need to see.”

“And you’re going away. Unbelievable.”

“Not a problem, as long as I have my laptop and full access.”

“I hope it’s a family emergency and not you on the beach somewhere.”

“Paris, she’s taking off for Paris.” Hayden sends me a snarky look.

Greenberg scowls. “A vacation? At the beginning of the case. I told Rebecca time was of the essence...”

Rebecca raps her knuckles on the table. “Be quiet, Simon. Our associates aren’t prisoners. And Micki has a very important event coming up in Paris. As she told you, working remotely is still working, and our team will meet every day by video call.”

The congressman’s look is sullen. Being schooled by your lawyer is not fun. I think there must be some history there.

“Explain again why you need access to my office machine?”

“There may be other material on that computer, different from your desktop. And I haven’t even started accessing the files.”

He glowers.

“If you have your laptop with you, I’d like to have our tech guy clone your hard drive. And send someone over to your campaign and congressional offices as well. We need to start evaluating files.”

Before I can continue, Greenberg interrupts, “No, I’m playing golf after this. My laptop is at home.” His impatient tone doesn’t bode well. “Rebecca, I didn’t want to bring this up here, but I’m pressed for time.”

She raises one beautifully sculpted brow. “Go on, Simon.”

“I’m not sure having Ms. Press on the team is a wise idea.”

Hayden fails to suppress a grin while I clench my teeth to keep my jaw in place.

“Why is that?” The temperature in the room has dropped into the minus zone, and yet I’m overheated.

“I have it from a reliable source she is in her own legal difficulties.”

What the h…?

“I’m not aware of anything.” Rebecca’s expression is neutral, but I can hear the tightness in her vocal cords.

“Ms. Press.” He turns his inquisitor’s face to me. “Isn’t it true someone is stalking you?”

“That has nothing to do with your case. My ‘stalker’ isn’t interested in my legal cases.”

“How can you be sure, Micki?” Hayden barely disguises his gloat. “Perhaps sabotaging the firm would be great for getting revenge on you.”

The conference room door opens and Tyler Miller walks in. “Sorry to interrupt, but are you finished? Simon and I don’t want to miss our tee time.”

Rebecca takes a deep breath. “Run along, boys. I’d hate to interfere with your golf game.”
