I feel like all I’ve done in the last two weeks is lose myself and my convictions, my dreams, my hopes. Caden reignited them with the fire in his voice.

How does he do it? Always getting through to me like he knows me inside out. I want to bathe in the hope he made me feel. I want to hold his hand tightly, to let him hug me, and use my body.

He is absolutely irresistible tonight, and it’s entirely unfair for my heart. I made an effort because I knew he was taking me to a nice place, and he did the same.

He’s wearing black slacks that stretch around his perfect ass, a simple white button-down with the sleeves rolled up. Tattoos are peeking out on his forearms and his strong hands. The first two buttons are open. He had a suit jacket on but he’s given it to me since I had nothing and I was freezing. Good, because I love watching the shirt wrapping snugly around his shoulders.

The man coerced me into going on a date with him, and I’m leaving the restaurant as if it had been my lifelong dream to go on said date.

“Billie!” a hoarse voice calls behind us. We both stop and turn around, unsure of who it could be. We don’t really know anyone on this side of Silver Falls.

My eyes widen as I recognize the man walking the same way as us. Tall with broad shoulders and a confident demeanor. His pitch-black hair is similar to Caden’s, except his is shorter and better kept. His midnight eyes take me and Caden in before he looks at our joined hands.

“Now, that’s unexpected,” he says as his poised smile settles over his lips.

I hadn’t seen Jake White in over two years. He never contacted me again after the night we all thought he had died. Jamie had told me he was alive. She had messaged me to thank me for all the help that night despite our differences and that she wanted to bury the hatchet. After all, her boyfriend had broken up with her and used me to break her heart. We weren’t exactly best friends. Still, I appreciated her message. I never replied because I was too taken by my own grief. I was burying the girl I once was, the girl who Caden had destroyed.

“Billie, how are you?” Jake takes another step toward me, opening his arms to take me into a hug. Automatically, Caden’s hand drops mine to grab the back of my neck and haul me back. He’s a little taller than Jake, while my Stoneview ex is much broader.

“Weren’t you meant to be dead?” Caden asks as a hello. He holds me closer to him as he throws a death stare at Jake.

Jake takes a good look at us and lets out a small laugh. “No, I just napped for a little while.” I notice the way his voice isn’t as smooth as it was before that fight. His opponent in the Death Cage strangled him, which must have caused severe damage.

“So, you two are…together?”

“No,” I assert at the same time Caden calmly says yes.

Jake throws his head back, a throaty laugh resonating around us. “I’ve been there, man,” he tells Caden. “Good luck.”

I feel Caden tense before his wicked smile appears. “What do you mean you’ve been there?”

Realizing the misunderstanding, I jump in before this encounter turns into a bloodbath. “He means with his girlfriend, Jamie. Not with me.” I put a hand on Caden’s chest. “You’re still with Jamie, right Jake?”

I don’t even care if he’s still with her or not. He better say yes.

“Still with Jamie.” He nods. “She’s waiting at our friend’s house for her takeaway.” He shows us the plastic bags he’s holding.

“Nice,” I say awkwardly. “Do you guys still live in Stoneview?” The more I point to the fact that he and his girlfriend are serious, the better it is for everyone.

“No, we moved to Philadelphia for colle—”

“My patience for you addressing my girl has officially reached its limit.” His tone is cool, but his words are knives. “You’ve escaped death once. You shouldn’t tempt it a second time.”

“Damn, Billie,” Jake chuckles. “I knew you needed a firm hand. Didn’t realize you actually wanted a complete psycho.”

I bulge my eyes at Jake, silently asking why he has a death wish.

“The psycho has a switchblade. Remember that before you mention knowing anything about her.”

Jake doesn’t lose his confidence. He smiles brightly at Caden and replies, “Nice. Do you use it on her? I tried a gun on Jamie. Highly recommend it.”

Because like recognizes like, I feel Caden’s attitude changes drastically. “Oh,” he simply says, a malicious bell ringing in his tone. “I think you would love that, little bee. Wouldn’t you?”

His sinful eyes come to mine, the green sparkling with excitement. He must notice the terror on my face. “We’ll start small, baby” He grins down at me. “Don’t worry.”

He starts guiding me away as he says, “We’ve got things to do now. Nice to meet you, Jake.”

I don’t even think Jake understands what it means to hear that from Caden.Nice to meet you.
