“Yes. I want to know if after everything we’ve been through…if you still love me,” I whisper, my voice disappearing under the electricity he’s sending through my body.

He pulls away from the corner of my lips and buries his face in my hair. Inhaling deeply, he exhales and says, “Tell me. On a rainy day, when the skies flood the world with despair…does the sun stop shining above the clouds?”

My heart explodes in my chest. Hope is a traitorous feeling. Your heart wants to believe the possibilities you’re dying for, wants to read between the lines. But the brain needs cold hard proof before handing out your beating organ.

“Caden,” I choke as I feel the tears coming back. “Just tell me you still fucking love me.”

He pulls away but wraps his arms around my waist too.

“How could I stop loving you? My heart is yours, little bee. It only loves because you showed it how to.” He wraps a hand around my jaw and brings our faces only an inch from each other, looking deeply into my soul when he adds, “And now that I’ve got yours too…you’re mine forever. Understood?”

I nod, my lips parting slightly from the need to kiss him. “Yes.”

“Good girl.”

His lips crash against mine just before his tongue invades me. The world stops, and the pouring rain disappears. It’s sensual, loving, and possessive—only the way Caden King knows how to kiss me.

He pulls away, and his eyes dart down. “Billie,” he snarls, frustration coming out of him. Panic holds me again before he looks at me. “Did you run after me barefoot in the fucking rain?”

“Oh,” I breathe out, reassured that it’s nothing important. “I came straight out of the cage.”

“You’re gonna catch a deadly cold,” he seethes.

“Worth it.” I smile up at him and give him a peck on the lips.

He leans down, slides an arm under my legs and one under my shoulders, and lifts me off the ground. “Let’s get you back inside.” I sneeze from the cold as he starts walking, and then he adds, “I’m going to spank your ass so bad for damaging what’s mine.”

CADEN

Back in My Arms – Carlie Hanson

After grabbing her stuff in a hurry, trying to avoid anyone wanting to see her, Billie and I ran back to my car, holding each other’s hand in the rain as we sped across the parking lot.

She asked me to drive her to her house so she could shower, and we could hide in her room before anyone came back.

She went through the front door and told me to go to the back because Aisha would be back from her evening walk.

“Sorry,” Billie whispers as she opens her window. “Aisha hates violence so she never comes to my fights. She’s in the kitchen right now.”

I climb through her window and look around. “I am never going to reach your room through the front door, am I?”

“Not in this lifetime, no,” she laughs. “I’m gonna have a shower. Stay here.” A low growl grabs our attention, and I take a step back as Murder takes a dangerous one toward me.

“Did you not teach her yet that she must love me?”

“Murder!” Billie whistles and taps on the bed. “Come here, girl. You know Caden.” She rubs her back and behind her ears, as the dog starts lying down. “He’s very mean, but we like him anyway.”

“Well, that’s simply not helping,” I deadpan as I cross my arms.

She goes to leave, but I stop her. “Wait.”

She walks back to me. Probably because she hears the lack of confidence in my voice. “Are you okay?”

I nod. “Can I…” I grab one of her braids. “Can I undo your hair?”

She smiles softly at me and touches my cheek, caressing my face. “Yeah, of course.” She grabs a chair where a lot of her clothes are piled up and sits down on it, her back to me.
