“You’re beautiful,” he whispers, his eyes darting everywhere on my body.

I bring my hands to my face, hiding how I feel myself blushing. He grabs my wrists, pulling them away. “Don’t hide. I like you in pink.”

I laugh, fighting and still trying to put my arms over my face. “I have to go back,” I sigh. “I can’t bail on volunteer day.”

As the orgasm high starts to drop, my friends’ words come back to me. Ella is sure she’s seen a tattoo. Xi tells me he’s not part of NSC.

Why would he lie to me?

I grab the hem of his t-shirt, ready to pull it off, but I stop short when I feel his grip tighten on my wrists. In a split second, he harshly pulls me back up, observing my left arm.

“What the fuck is that?” he hisses as he looks at the bruise on my upper arm and the other on my forearm.

It’s been a week, but they’re still slightly visible. A muddy shade of brown.

My brain stalls for a second, his eyes darting everywhere on my body. He catches the large welt on my thigh, still swollen and bruised. “Alex.” There’s a panic in his voice I have never heard from him before—emotions blending with the worry.

“Oh.” I fake a smile and act unperturbed despite my heart kicking at my chest. “It’s nothing, I—”

One hand releases my right wrist and grabs my t-shirt. He pulls me so hard I’m forced to get off the desk. Pushing my top up to my throat, he observes my chest, my boobs, and his eyes finally fall to the other welt on my ribs.

Only one word leaves his lips. One simple question.

“Who?” he growls.

“Me,” I lie in a reassuring tone. “Will you stop worrying so much? This is from a drunken fall. It’s initiations. I still get drunk practically every night.”

Wrapping a hand around my jaw, he drags me until my back hits a wall.

“Xi,” I gasp. “Stop…”

“I’m going to ask one more time, and you’re going to tell the truth.” His harsh breath warms my face, his beautiful eyes intensely dark. “Who did this to you?”

“It was me.” I blink up at him, the lie acidic on my tongue and burning my throat. “I promise it was just a drunken fall on my side when walking home from Zeta Nu. I fell into a bush.”

His nostrils flare as I watch him trying to stay calm. I don’t want him to lose it. I don’t want him in the same state he was when Chester wouldn’t let me go. Xi can’t even hold a conversation when I’ve got a cut on my knee. What would happen if he knew what my dad does to me?

“You better be telling the truth, Alex. If I find out you lied, you’ll watch me kill the person you lied for.”

I gulp, nodding for lack of finding words.

“I have a lot of work tonight, but I want you to text me when you’re home safe. I’ll call you before bed.”

I nod again.

“Tell me you’re going to let me know when you’re home safe,” he adds in that annoyed voice of his.

“I-I’ll let you know when I’m home safe.”

He exhales as he closes his eyes, his long lashes fanning his cheeks. “Good girl,” he murmurs.

He presses me against the wall, his hand still on my jaw, and plants his lips on mine.

Just like that, the fear disappears.

All it takes is a deep kiss that makes my heart somersault, and all my anxiety disappears.
