“Of course.” Her tone is so much nicer to him now that she’s actually taken a second to look at him and realized how gorgeous he is. She grabs the pen she was keeping behind her ear. “Go ahead.”

“Ziad Benhaim,” he says calmly.

“Zi-add,” she repeats. “How do you spell that?”

“Z.I.A.D.”

“and Ben-hime?”

“B.E.N.H.A.I.M.”

I try to keep cool, to act like I’m not interested, even though I know what’s happening in my mind. There’s a special place that saves his first and last name, like a little gift to keep for myself. Ziad is never going to come back here after today, but I want to keep a memory of the man who helped me.

Once we’ve got a card each, we follow her inside the building. It’s a brand-new condo with high ceilings and marble floors. There’s a man at reception who welcomes us with a smile as we walk past. Everything looks perfect. You can taste the luxury in the air as she takes us to an elevator.

“You’re in the penthouse,” Carly says as we all go in. “The elevator doesn’t take you directly inside the apartment, but you’re still the only ones on the floor.” She presses the P on the elevator, and we go up.

“So,” she explains, “I don’t have access to your keycode for the front door.” She’s addressing me, but her eyes keep going to Ziad, her eyelashes fluttering every time he looks back at her.

“It’s alright. My friends are in,” I snap, getting her attention back to me.

God, the woman is obsessed. We get it, he’s so beautiful it feels like an opportunity not to miss looking at him.

I’m the one who’s acting obsessed right now.

We reach the top, and Ziad and I walk out of the elevator. I put a hand up when Carly starts to follow. “We got it from here. Thanks.”

I’m only too aware of how cold I am to her, but she annoyed me. It’s senseless to think that way, and yet here I am.

The doors close and she finally disappears.

I turn to Ziad and put my hands on my hips. “Security guard?”

“What have I been doing all day?” he chides. “Been saving you like it’s my fucking job.” Is he reprimanding me right now? And why do I feel hot from it?

My heart skips a beat, and I take a step back, shocked by my own reaction. This is not good. I need to be away from this man.

“Look, thanks for everything, but I need to get going now.”

He cocks an eyebrow and moves toward me. “You look flustered,” he points out honestly.

Taking another step back, I end up against the wall in the small hallway. “W-what? Not at all. I had a long day, that’s it. Now leave.” I extend my arm toward the elevator.

Another step from him. His eyes stay on mine, his body too close. “It must be nice to have a name that literally opens any door for you. I’m sure any order you give is executed right away.”

I can’t look back at him, his gaze too intense. I look at his chest instead, but then fingers come to grab my chin and tilt my head up. I gulp and notice the corner of his lips tilting up in the slightest.

“Don’t ever order me around again, Alexandra. Delacroix or not, I’ll put you on your knees and make you regret it.”

My eyes widen as my throat dries up. Still, the worst is how my heart drops and my stomach tightens.

“Is that clear?”

I nod, the movement barely noticeable. My entire body is melting under his stare, and I can’t seem to control my muscles.

“Tell me,” he insists, his voice low.

My thighs tremble as I feel them squeeze and put pressure between my legs.
