“You know I hate the wordthings. There’s always something it should be defining.”

God, I’m exhausted. This man takes everything out of me, and I can never catch a break from him.

“Yes,” I agree. “I should have said, I understand there are more importantmatters.”

“Better. Alright, get working, then. Don’t go to bed too late.”

“Okay, Dad. Bye—” The sound of the line cutting tells me he’s already gone.

I pinch my lips, putting my phone on the table and pressing my thumb and index finger on my tear ducts.

He’s not here. He can’t hurt you. Just do your workand send it back tonight to keep him happy.

Collecting myself, I take a deep breath and read the essay questions Leo sent me.

I’ve been reading articles and planning my essay for hours when a knock on the front door startles me.

Who could possibly be coming here now that we’ve moved out? Sighing to myself, I jump off the kitchen stool. I bet it’s one of Ella’s men who left something behind after a one-night stand.

I open the door, ready to tell him she’s not here, when my eyes meet cinnamon ones. Fall colors swirl around his pupils, and my mouth falls agape, brain stalling.

“Peach here?”

A slight fissure cracks in my chest and the knowledge that it’s disappointment annoys me. I can’t hope for this man to bring me any sense of happiness. That’s not who he is.

All probabilities run through my head.

Did she sleep with him? Is he so hooked he’s coming back for more?

Did the man I can’t stop thinking and dreaming of fall for my best friend?

If someone can make a fuckboy forget all about his sick ways, it’s Peach. She’s gorgeous, funny, badass. And that unbelievable, round ass that got her her nickname is to die for, truly. Everyone falls for Peach.

Xi fell for Peach.

I must stay silent for too long because he leans down ever so slightly, like an adult about to explain something to a child. “Peach. Is she here?” His emotionless voice brings me back down, like a bucket of cold water splashing over me.

“Um…no.”

His annoyed look deepens. Like I’m wasting his time. He checks his phone and back at me. “She said to meet her at her place.”

My disappointment shifts into sadness, and I give my best fake smile. “There was a misunderstanding. This isn’t our place anymore. We moved into Xi Ep today, so…yeah. That’s where she is. Sorry.”

He’s wearing a black baseball cap, the bill at the front and hiding his face slightly, but his annoyed stare is unmistakable.

I go to close the door in his face, feeling like the most stupid girl for ever thinking the fact that he retrieved my car for me and took care of me when I was vulnerable could have meant that broody Xi liked me.

My movement is stopped, the door stuck in place just before slamming, and I look up to see his hand wrapped around the edge.

“How many times do I have to tell you to stop saying sorry.”

He pushes the door back open, and I’m forced to take a few steps back as he enters uninvited.

He closes the door behind him and walks the hallway into the living area without even a look back.

What the hell is going on?

He pauses when he notices the laptop and notepads next to it. The kitchen island is a mess of crumpled papers, pens, highlighters, and political science books.
