Good God. I won’t only hurt her if I go ahead with Vito’s task. I will completely crush her. She is too naïve for this world. She belongs in a fucking Disney movie.

The oven timer beeps, saving me from telling her that I am, in fact, attracted to her.

I grab oven gloves and take the dish out.

“Mm,” I hear as she approaches. “It smells delicious.” I grab a plate and help her to a serving of baked gnocchi. “Do you often cook?” she asks as we settle down.

“I live on my own, so yes.”

“Are you not eating?”

“I’ve had food in the last twenty-four hours. Unlike you.”

I pull the chair and look at her pointedly until she sits down.

I sit down on the perpendicular side to hers, watching her as she sets a napkin on her lap and grabs the fork and knife like we’re eating in Stoneview’s best restaurant. She delicately cuts a piece of the bake and blows on her food, before swallowing it like it’s caviar. Her mouth is firmly closed, her back straight. She puts her cutlery back down and dabs the corner of her mouth.

“It’s delicious,” she finally says once she’s swallowed her first bite.

“That’s the most Stoneview way I’ve ever seen someone eat dinner. No one is watching you, you know?”

“You are.” She smiles, her lips closed. “You’re always watching, aren’t you?” My heart skips a beat. “Otherwise, how would you know I’m walking home drunk and high in the middle of the night on my own. How would you know where to bring my car back to me.” She leans forward, both her palms on the table. “How would you know the code to enter this apartment?”

Her eyes shine with pride before she goes back to her plate.

“You’re annoying,” I lie.

“So are you. I’m not exactly a huge fan of the ‘I hate everyone’ personality, but I’d like to believe it’s a front. I’m sure you'd be passable if I get to know you.”

“Passable?” I mutter. “Are you aware of the kind of person you’re alone with right now, Alex? I wouldn’t anger me if I were you.”

“You’re always angry. Life frustrates you, and it’s written all over your face. You must do something about it, or it’ll swallow you whole. It seems fucking your way around town isn’t helping either.”

Being that perceptive can’t be good for her, surely.

There’s a short pause before she changes the topic, like a girl well-trained in not letting a sensitive conversation last for too long.

“So, no high school. What did your parents think about that?”

“My dad was already gone, and my mom couldn’t stop me.”

“Why did you choose not to go?”

“I needed money and fast. The streets offered that, and high school didn’t.”

“What did you need money for?”

I feel my jaw tighten and narrow my eyes at her when I realize what’s happening. “We’re not doing this, Alex.”

“Doing what?” she asks innocently.

“Getting into my past.”

“Why not?” She starts playing with the gnocchi on her plate. “After all, you’re here at almost one in the morning, feeding me and making sure I take care of myself. Why not get to know each other?”

Ignoring how she tries to get me to admit I like her again, I lean forward. “If you don’t stop playing with your food, I’ll tell your mommy and daddy you’re up so late. Now eat.”

She chuckles to herself and starts eating again. “Do you want to fuck me? Is that why you’re here so late?”
