“No, no, pretty girl.” Elliot’s smile is creepy. “There’s only space for one gun in this garage, and I believe that’s the one pointed at your friend.”

I place a placating hand on Zara’s shoulder, encouraging her to let go of the gun tucked in the back of her jeans.

“We just want to talk, really.” I wouldn’t believe him even if he wasn’t playing with the wrench right now, rolling his wrist and tracing circles with it in the air.

“Grab Logan and go to the back,” I tell Zara. If I can spare at least two of my friends from this, I will.

“Xi,” she complains.

“Now.”

She huffs and helps Logan up. He’s still dizzy from the hit, understandably. The brothers don’t seem to have a problem with them going to the back. Maybe they know there’s no way out and they can’t get help. Maybe they don’t plan on staying long enough for our crew to get here.

It’s terrifying to see how much this town broke me. My heartbeat doesn’t rise. The fear for my best friend’s life is manageable, overridden by the need for survival.

“Let’s talk outside,” I say with a cool voice.

Ethan shifts on his feet, his unreadable black eyes darting to me.

“If we go outside, how can my brother threaten sweet Tamar’s life while I do this?” He brings the wrench down on the windshield of the car he was sitting on.

Tamar gasps, her hands coming to her mouth. “Don’t!”

I take a step toward Elliot, ready to end him, but Ethan takes one toward my friend. “Tsk, tsk,” he tuts me, pressing the gun against her forehead this time.

“Please, this garage is Logan’s whole life,” Tamar whimpers. “It’s the only way to feed his family!”

“Aw,” Elliot pouts, tilting his head to the side. “Hear that, Xi? It’s hiswhole. Life.” He brings the wrench down on the mirror, detaching it from the car.

“Where the fuck is she?” He hits another car.

“You want to know where she is?” I say calmly. “I’ll tell you.”

He stops and looks at me with surprise on his face. This man is so emotive; he’s an open book.

“After a fight in the Death Cage.”

Elliot snorts. “Once I get you in there and kill you, how are you gonna give me what I want?”

“See it my way.” I take another step toward him. “Once I kill you, I’ll give the info you want to Ethan. He’ll happily join her once the North Shore is mine.”

All I have to do is winonefight in the Death Cage for NSC to take over. The rules are the rules, and I’m a beast. It’s the only reason the Kings don’t want to set it up. I’ve been winning fight after fight at the warehouse. They’re terrified to put me in the Death Cage with one of theirs.

“Deal?” I insist, stopping right in front of him. A slow smile spreads on his lips, the total opposite of my unmoving face.

As a response, he lifts his arm again. This time I’m close enough to grab his wrist, take the crowbar from him, and before he can react, I hit him across the body with it.

One. Powerful. Hit.

He falls to the ground, grunting as he holds his side.

But my move is useless.

“Xi!” Tamar’s whimper grabs my attention. Ethan is behind her now, holding the gun to her temple.

“I don’t think you understand how the game goes,” Ethan grits. “Step back.”

I press my lips together, exhaling through my nose like a fucking raging bull.
