“I believe you just gave yourself one astounding orgasm. Feel better?”

“Yeah,” I panted in utter confusion. “You seriously didn’t fuck me just now?”

Wearing an amused grin, he slowly shook his head from side to side.

“When I fuck you, it’s going to last alotlonger than that. And you’re going to come harder than that. And then you’re going to come again, and again, and again...until you tell me to stop.”

My belly clenched at the thought, and he must’ve seen the look of disbelief on my face, because he added, “All I did was play with your breasts, which are exquisite, by the way. The rest was all your doing.”

He snickered under his breath, still gazing at the post-orgasm flush that was fading from my body.

“At least now we have an idea of how powerful your imagination truly is. I can’t say I’m terribly surprised. Sex is where so many of our wildest fantasies reside. We can play more later, if you like, but we really ought to cover some more distance before it gets dark.”

“Sure,” I said, still bewildered but recovering quickly. I fanned my neck, wishing I had a scrunchie to put my hair up.

And then suddenly I was holding one.

Chess gave me a knowing smile as I twisted my hair into a messy bun.

“Ready for clothes? I certainly wouldn’t mind if you chose to leave them off.”

“I’m sure you wouldn’t, but it doesn’t seem very practical,” I reasoned. With some focused thought, I was back in my blue dress and jacket, with the boots that Chess had made for me.

“Hey,” I said suddenly, stopping in my tracks. "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course," he replied, his eyes locked onto mine.

"Is this really happening? Or am I just dreaming?" I needed to know if this was all in my head, or if it was actually real.

"Does it matter?" Chess asked, smirking. "You're here, aren't you?"

“Yeah,” I admitted, glancing around at the surreal forest surrounding us. "But it feels too good to be true."

"Life has a funny way of surprising us, Alice," he said, drawing closer. His hand curled around my waist, sending sparks up my back and down my legs. "Sometimes, we find what we've been searching for in the most unexpected places."

I looked into his eyes, which seemed to hold a universe of secrets, and felt an undeniable pull towards him.

"And what is it thatyou'vebeen searching for?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“An end to Wonderland’s suffering,” he replied without a moment’s hesitation. “Freedom from the Red Queen’s reign of terror. And perhaps...when everything’s been made right again and our world is back in balance...someone to share it all with. What about you, Alice? What haveyoubeen searching for?”

“I’m not really sure," I murmured, my heart pounding in my ears. I had thoughts on that, but every single one of them felt totally cliche and unattainable.

What was I searching for?

Loyal friends. Not people who were only nice to me until they got whatever they wanted and then bailed. Not people who were only interested in my connections, or made everything about them. I wanted badass, thoughtful, ride-or-die friends.

A higher purpose. Not like in a religious sense, but something more meaningful than a life of sleeping in until noon, then partying and shopping my life away. It might be nice to have some kind of legacy...or to at least have a useful, positive impact on the world.

Respect. That was a tall order, especially after my shoe empire had crashed and burned in front of the entire world. Even before that, every bad life choice I’d ever made had been documented on my family’s reality TV show. Chicks like me weren’t getting invitations to royal weddings. We were getting the front page of tabloids for flashing our panties while falling out of a Lamborghini.

I speak from experience.

So as I thought about Chess’s loaded question, I told him the only thing I was comfortable saying out loud.

“I guess right now, all I’m searching for is that magic sword.”

“Well, then, let's keep going," he said, letting go of my waist, and we continued on our journey into the heart of the unknown.
