ChapterOne

ALICE

The King of Clubs was laughing at me.

Not in an obnoxious, drunk frat boy at the comedy club kind of way, but in a twisted, sinister, wicked kind of way.

He’d tricked me.

The douchelord hadtrickedme! He’d kidnapped me and stolen the Vorpal Sword from me, and now he’d just tricked me into making a deal to stay with him until he said otherwise.

For all I knew, that might be forever.

Fuck my life.

Right in the ass.

With a traffic cone.

“That’s not fair!” I screamed at him. “You asshole! I never had a chance of leaving, did I? That’s not fair at all!”

“I don’t play fair, Alice,” said the King of Clubs as he returned to the black velvet sofa and resumed his card game with Callister. “I play towin.”

It took me a hot second to pick my jaw back up from where it had fallen on the floor. I’d been screwed over so many times in my life, taken advantage of because of my family’s fame and money and connections, but this was some next level shit.

I had a closet full of Birkin bags, Miu Miu, and Prada. I drove a fucking Bentley. When I wanted a table at the hottest restaurant, I didn’t need reservations. I always got the best seat. Same with movie premiers and music festivals. I only sat in the VIP section. I’d been to the Met Galatwice. I never had to wait in line for anything...not even Taylor Swift tickets.

Wherever I went, people fell over themselves to kiss my ass, impress me, or make my life easier. I was Alice Fucking Darling, and I wasn’t about to put up with the King of Clubs’ bullshit for another second.

Wonderland wasn’t evenreal!

I was only here because I’d had too much to drink and followed a guy dressed like the White Rabbit through the streets of LA so I could return his stupid pocket watch. I must’ve slipped in the rain and hit my head.

Or maybe I’d simply blacked out and my personal assistant Dinah had stuffed me in an Uber and dragged me back home. I knew the second I got out of this black room full of big fancy mirrors, I’d wake up in my own bedroom and vow to never get so wasted again.

I marched across the polished black and gold tiles of the king’s private apartment and wrapped my hands around the ornate golden doorknob.

It didn’t budge.

With all my might, I heaved and twisted and yanked. Then I tried pushing as hard as I could.

Nothing.

My hands were starting to hurt.

“Should we tell her it’s locked?” Callister asked, glancing over his hand of cards until his gaze met the king’s.

The King of Clubs revealed a faint smile as I spun around to glare at him. He’d be gorgeous if he wasn’t such an insufferable prick.

“I think she’s figured it out.”

“Let me go!” I demanded. “I’m not your prisoner!”

“On the contrary,” the king murmured as he casually added more gold poker chips to the existing stack on the table between him and Callister. He tossed down a card, then looked up at me. “That’sexactlywhat you are.”

“You can’t keep me here forever!”

“I can keep you as long as I want. You and I made a deal. I didn’t get to where I am by going back on my word.”
