“I’m good. You’ve been drinking. I got you.”

“Okay.”

I reached over, taking his hand into mine. I reclined my seat slightly and kicked my shoes off my feet, attempting to find comfort for the ride home. Musiq played in the background. One of his most recognized records soothed my heart as he spat about love and how so many people used its name in vain.

Somewhere along the way, my eyes closed, peace overcame me, and I’d dozed off. When I woke up, fresh air was brushing the tip of my nose and Milo was standing beside me. Because there was no way I was sliding back into my shoes, I stretched my arms, praying that my man had the strength to tote me inside. I wanted nothing more than to curl up next to him and sleep the night away.

“I need you to wake up, baby, and listen to me.”

The seriousness in his voice was startling, forcing me up in my seat. I wiped the blurriness from my eyes, finally realizing we weren’t home and it wasn’t our driveway I was waiting to be carried up. We were parked beside a private place with the lights glowing and the engine running.

“Milo. What’s going on?”

“That wedding you wanted to happen in two weeks… it’s happening next Sunday, baby. Your mother and I have been working overtime for the last month to pull this off for you. On that plane is your mother, Kleu, Shayla, Aeir, and Mason. You’ll land in Paris in a few short hours where you’ll meet some expensive ass designer your mother had to make you three different dresses. You can choose any one of them you like and if you don’t like any of them, you have an appointment at a dress shop at two tomorrow evening. I want you to have the wedding of your dreams, baby girl. And I don’t want you to stress doing it. I’ve handled it all. Just pick the prettiest dress you can find and meet me down that aisle. Aight?”

“Baby. Seriously?”

“Yes, Nature. Now, go. They’re waiting on you.”

“How’d they even get here? We just left them.”

“Baby, they left immediately after us. I’ve been driving in circles, making sure we didn’t beat them. I let you sleep.”

“Milo, you’re just… I love you so much, baby.”

His sadness hadn’t subsided, leaving me conflicted.

“Will you be okay without me?”

“I have my brothers, baby. They share my pain. I’ll be fine.”

“Okay. Call me if you need me.”

“I will.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“You gon’ let her roll or you gon’ hold her hostage, my nigga?”

An unfamiliar tenor sparked concern within us both. However, my furrowed brows looked nothing like Milo’s lifted brows. Confused, I searched through the darkness to find a slim, nearly identical figure headed in our direction.

Caving immediately, Milo gasped in disbelief. I watched his chest deflated as he held his right palm against it. A face I hadn’t seen in ages brought my smile to my eyes. From the looks of things, I wasn’t the only one who was in for pleasant surprises.

“Chem?” I questioned in disbelief.

“You not expecting me to answer that, are you?” he asked, spreading his arms.

“No. Not really. My God. It’s been so long.”

“Yeah. Sorry about that. But I’m here, and for good reason. I heard this nigga put a rock on that finger of yours.”

Walking into his chest, I allowed him to wrap his hands around me before pulling back. He lifted my hand to examine the rings on my finger.

“He did well.”

“He did well,” I agreed.
