“Yes.”

“When did I become N—”

“You want to beat around the bush or you want to tell me why the prettiest girl in the world is sounding a bit flustered on her special day?”

“I’m fine, Milo,” she lied.

“Special plans?” I deflected, understanding she wouldn’t be letting me in. Probing wasn’t an option, but there were other, more satisfying options.

“I don’t know. I was thinking of taking the day to rest and relax. I’ve made no plans and I’m okay with that this year.”

“Hannah?”

“Long story.” She chuckled, nervously. “But thanks, Milo, for the flowers and strawber—”

“Eight,” I blurted, refusing to let the opportunity pass me by.

“Huh?”

“Eight o’clock. Be ready and at your mom’s at eight.”

“Milo. I don’t think that—”

“Would you rather I pull at to your house and knock on the front door? Because I will. I don’t give a fuck, Nature. You don’t have plans, but I do, and they happen to include the birthday girl.”

“Still demanding, I see,” she sighed.

My silence forced a response. I had little to say. I simply needed Nature to understand that her night just got a bit more interesting and it wouldn’t end until she felt better about herself, better about her day.

“Alright.”

“Still knee deep,” I corrected her. “I’ll see you at eight, Nay, and not a minute later.”

I moved to disconnect the call but was halted by her voice.

“Milo?”

“Yeah?”

“What should I wear?”

Nothing.I drew blood from my bottom lip as I closed my eyes to shove my true thoughts back and allowed the more pleasant ones room to surface.

“A piece that makes you feel insanely beautiful. It’s your day, baby girl. If you don’t have that piece in your closet, I have no problem sending that, too.”

“No. You’ve done enough already. I can figure out the rest.”

“Just let me know. If you come up em—”

“I can handle it, Milo. I promise.”

“Alright. Eight.”

“Eight,” she confirmed.

Synchronously, we ended the call. And for ten minutes in total, I was unmoving. Temporary paralysis left me with stiffened limbs and dry eyes. It wasn’t until a knock at my door startled me that I managed to snap out of the state I was in.

“Mr. Domino,” Christina exclaimed. “Just one more thing.”
