“I really am sorry. Articulation is not my strongest suit,” he said.

“Oh? I didn’t notice.”

He cocked his head. “Don’t sass me, Liv, it won’t help anything.”

Instead, I rolled my eyes. He caught the gesture and his gaze glittered. His fingers closed in my hair at the nape of my neck and drew my head back. Holding it tightly enough I couldn’t squirm.

He bent, his mouth an inch from mine. “Do you need me to bend you over and fuck you like I paid for it?”

“How is that different than any other time?” I managed.

Faster than I could comprehend, he flipped me around and bent me over the island countertop. The edge pressed into my stomach and the hard rise of his cock pushed into my ass. He still had a grip on my hair and he used it to pull my head back against my shoulder.

“Bad girl,” he said.

“I’m not your trophy wife,” I said, my jaw tensed.

“Yes,” he said. “You are.”

I gasped, astonished by his audacity even after all this time.

He pushed his face into my neck. His breath burned hot beneath my ear. “But you’re so much more than that, Liv. You are mine in every way you can be. My wife, my queen, the mother of my children. But you’re also my whore and I paid for you with blood and violence. Remember that.”

CHAPTER FOUR

LUCIEN

I fucked her again and we slept naked, tangled up beneath the sheets. My cock still pushed inside her familiar heat. It was a little past five when I woke the next morning and pulled myself from her body to have a shower and head upstairs to work.

In my office, I swiped my phone to a barrage of messages from Cosimo. He managed the flow of weaponry in and out of the city. And right now, he was trying to handle one of the biggest problems we’d encountered.

We had no guns.

Confident in the flow of inventory, we’d sold our primary warehouses dry during the winter. We had a new supplier, an international company. They’d provided us two shipments last summer that had been executed successfully. But about a month ago, Cosimo had come to me with the news that the supply chain was disrupted.

No one was sure what happened.

Cosimo investigated it for weeks, but we still weren’t sure whether the weapons had been stolen or simply lost. Our supplier had no answers, but they honored our insurance agreement so we hadn’t lost money, but there were manufacturing issues. It would be months before they could send another ship to our harbor.

Which left us without the guns we needed should we be attacked.

Cosimo and Duran were scrambling to find a new supplier, but they couldn’t get things moving quickly enough. Ahmed was scouring the States trying to come up with something, but so far he’d been unsuccessful.

It was a mess.

I took a beat before calling my brother-in-law and sinking into my chair. The phone rang once and he picked up.

“The western coast opportunity is fucked,” he said. “They’re not willing to sell, not when they have alliances on the eastern coast to maintain.”

“We’re peaceful with the East Coast,” I said. “Llwyd and I get along fine.”

“They’re talking about the Irish.”

“Nobody gets along with the Irish. And Llwyd is going to seize their city, give it five years, anyway.”

Cosimo sighed and I heard his car door slam. “I told them all this, but they’re not willing to risk fucking up their current business deals. We need to let it go or they’re going to start wondering why we’re so desperate. We can’t have the other organizations getting wind of the fact that our ass is showing.”

I ran a hand over my face wearily. Through the window, I could see a group of deer gathering on the pond at the edge of the estate. Everything was tranquil here, protected from the danger looming overhead.
