After my hair was tied up and I’d rubbed oil and cream into my face, I curled up in bed to watch a TV show. My eyes grew heavy and after a while I put my tablet aside and crawled out of bed in search of my husband.

He was at his desk when I arrived. I’d put on a soft, dark blue slip, perhaps because it was his favorite and I wanted to rouse his interest. The room smelled pleasant, like wood smoke from the fireplace and whiskey.

“Are you busy?” he asked, sinking back.

I shook my head.

He beckoned me with two fingers and I slipped into the dim office and shut the door. He pushed his chair back and I slid between him and the desk. His hand ran up my stomach, over my breasts, and his fingertips lingered on my throat.

“It’s a gift,” he said quietly.

“What is?” My stomach fluttered.

“You are,” he said. “My wife.”

Warmth moved through my body and I dropped my lashes, feeling a sudden flush creep up my throat. His hand tightened, fingers compressing the sides of my neck. Drawing me close until our mouths were inches apart.

I slid into his lap, straddling his waist. His hands cradled my body and I combed my fingers through his hair and massaged them over the muscles of his shoulders. Enjoying the warmth of his skin—so different from what I saw in his eyes.

We made out, luxuriously. His mouth tasted so good and he knew exactly what I liked. I opened for him and let him suck my tongue and swallowed when he spat past my lips. Arousal built slowly between us. First in the hard rise of his cock beneath me, then in the slow tightening of my breasts as they brushed against his chest.

We kissed at his desk until he couldn’t take it anymore and he carried me to our bedroom. Our clothes piled on the floor and our bodies slipped between the sheets.

He broke away from my lips to take a breath.

“I love you,” he said.

I smiled as he kissed me again, our tongues touching briefly. He buried his face in my neck and his cock pushed against my thigh. I wrapped my arm around him and stroked the lean muscles of his upper back.

“I only ever want this, Lucien,” I murmured.

“What?” he asked, his voice muffled.

“You and me,” I said, my voice catching. “Together like this for the rest of our lives.”

He was quiet, but his mouth grazed my neck in a gentle kiss. He shifted and reached between us to guide his cock into me. The sex was sleepy, but urgent. Our bodies said everything our mouths couldn’t.

He was gone when I woke early in the morning. Outside, it was raining lightly and there was only a smudge of light on the horizon. I pushed open the window and leaned out. Fog rose from the lake where a herd of deer had gathered. In the air, I caught that strange scent like summer was ending.

Like frost threatened to creep over our windowpane.

Unsettled, I shut the window and pulled on my dressing gown. The house was completely silent, but not in a comforting way. I went to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee and took it out to the porch to watch the sunrise, hoping the golden rays would shake off the foreboding feeling in the back of my mind.

I stepped out onto the gravel. Something felt off. Like the sanctuary of our home had been invaded by sinister energy. Feet smarting, I made my way around the house to where Lucien kept the cars in the primary garage and scanned the area.

Everything was fine.

Neck prickling, I went back to the house and closed the door after me, locking it. Despite it being a Sunday, it wasn’t unusual for Lucien to go to work early, but today I hated that he was gone. I took a deep breath and laid aside my dressing gown and padded upstairs in just my slip.

Everything was eerily quiet. I turned on the faucet in the bathroom and tied up my hair.

A floorboard creaked in the bedroom.

My shoulders sagged. Thank God, Lucien was back. Relief washing through me, I darted out of the bathroom and stopped short.

Heat shot through me followed by a sudden freeze.

There was a man standing by the door, dressed in black with a neck gaiter pulled up over his mouth and nose. The entire world went still as we stared at each other.
